I made quite a few of these kits trying out different sizes of tubes and set ups. I like all of them for different reasons.

The one on the far left (a 2 liter bottle before it is inflated) is indestructible and tiny. It also has a spot near the neck that is smaller and holds the line perfectly for travel. This would be the small go to kit of choice.

The middle one has a little more room and is a little easier to wind. But it takes up more room and is not as tough. Pictured above

The right one is a bit tube and is the largest. It can be expanded to be even more huge. It would be the kit to have if you can spare a little toughness and would be doing serious fishing. It could hold tons of kit and is easier to wind with crank baits.

The draw back to building these kits is that you have to buy so much crap to make ONE kit. It is not like they sell 2 hooks - you have to buy a dozen. Cant buy 60 yards of line - you have to buy 300 yards... and so on.

Because of this - I am going to be selling all my extras in the form of the 2 liter kits soon to get rid of the extra kit! :)

Anyway - I caught a BUNCH of fish on the kit pictured above. I would wager in three outings (in lakes wherever I walked up to) I caught 5 - 8 pounds of fish (mostly blue gills). I was VERY happy with my kit and I know if I set up drop lines and spent a day or two fishing - I would be set with protein for some time.

That DEWC would not allow for line to come off very well.

I was skeptical about the casting ability of these as well as well until I purchased a half dozen and made a kit (figured if it didn't work I could use them to store batteries or a simple first aid kit). Once i got the kit up and running though I was impressed it was able to cast probably 10-15 yards with a couple split shots and a grub. It took a few casts to get the necessary technique down but it really does work. You can use the line in one hand and the tube in the other as a reel and it's decently fast. I like how you can keep the line rigged for quick opportunistic fishing, as the rubber O-ring does not crimp the line. There is plently of room in the 2 interior compartments for all you need. Dropped the unit once in the water and it floated, no leakage. I'd highly recommend this product for a pocket fishing rig.

Took it out last weekend with a friend to a lake in PA and caught a small mouth bass and plenty of crappies. Stayed 2 nights and ate fish the entire time, burdock root, and dandelions. Slept in debris huts and had nothing but this and my knife & canteen/cup.

The kit (and of course pics)

External
30 yards - 8 lb test
50ft - 65 lb test braided line (for drop line)
6 feet - Yellow Electrical Tape
5-6 feet paracord wrapping (over drop line)

Internal (2 compartments)

3 Lures
Assortment of Spit Shots
2 Celphane packs of artificial bait (power bait grubs, small worms black and purple)
1 Bobber
2 Fly Fishing Strike indicators (used as bobbers for small and light set ups)

Cool man!

Here is a tip that I do. I play off about 6 feet of line - and take my thumb off the line to allow it to come off easily. I hold the fishing kit in my left hand - and the line and sinker in my right. I then spin the line and sinkers in my right hand like it is a sling - I let it go at the right time and point the fishing kit (and left hand) where I want the line to go. With three split shot and a grub I can cast 25 yards!

I had to add more line to my kit with this method - if you are not trying it - try it out and let me know!

That's a cool idea, seems you get a lot of leverage with the 6 ft already out and the sling motion. I basically was keeping a foot of line hanging, with a sidearm to underhand motion rocking the line backward then quickly forward (almost like sidearm bowling). I really was suprised at how casting works with such a small rig. I'm going to give your technique a try. It's great to see different variations on this fishing kit concept. Thanks

Gravitas,

Let me know what you come up with - it takes a little practice - but I find I can cast it all the further I need for bank casting.

Wow! Great looking rigs. I can see what I am doing this weekend. I have 3 of the protein shot containers waiting for action. Luckily, I already have most, if not all of the stuff in various tackle boxes scattered around.
Thanks for the pics.
