What is your opinon of his work?
I have ony seen pictures.From what I see it looks like quality work.
 
I kick myself for not going hungry to buy his award winning Bowie in Las Vegas. He and Dusty Moulton had tables next to each other and both mens work is "First Class Primo Good". Waaaaaaa! Get one if you can.
 
His work is right up there. He does great work. I've seen it in person at a few shows now and I would say you won't regret buying one of his knives. He's also a hell of a nice guy as well.

I too know first hand the quality of Bob's work as I own a couple Bowies from him.

His knives are excellent.

This Bowie of mine won Best Bowie and Fighter at Blade West Knife Show three years ago and it is one of my favorite knives that I own.

Bob is a very nice person to do business with as well.

This crummy picture that I took with the lame reflection on the blade doesn't do this knife justice.

that is the nicest Bob Lay that I have seen.

I find most of his work to look very similar. He has almost a Ron Gaston or D'holder feel to it, in that it is immediately recognizable. That is a good thing.

The bad thing is that although the workmanship is great, and the knives are appealing, they are also, for me, a bit of a yawn.

Nothing terribly exciting, in other words. I also don't care for the way he styles his guards. Kind of a Marbles'ish thing, with more meat on the end. Everytime I see them, I want to shave the top of the guard so it flows, and does not flare out on the end. Whereas Gaston, D'Holder and Dusty all change up the shapes of their handles, I have not seen Mr. Lay do this.

I figure that if you enjoy the knife, the prices are certainly fair, and you probably won't lose, if you need to sell it.

What is his production on an annual basis like? Anybody know? If he is turning out 200-300 per year, that is problematic. If he is doing like Dusty and making less than 100 knives annually, that would be more of a reason to buy.

He recently unloaded a bunch on Blade Gallery and I see a few on 2 other sites.
Your right about him not taking any chances with his styles.
 
Bob's knives are very well made. He is on my list of makers I want to buy a knife from.

He is a great guy also.
 
I have purchased three Bowies from Bob. Unfortunately, I have yet to take the time to photograph each of these knives because my photography of knives sucks.
That knife pictured above has a 10" blade.

My other Bowie is a much smaller looking "little brother" (7 1/2" blade)to the one above and purposely looks similar to the big one above. It looks very close to the 7 1/2" bladed one pictured below(picture from knifeart) and is awaiting engraving at some point.

The third knife I bought is also a Bowie. I purchased it for my brother as a gift to him for becoming the Chief of Police of his city's police dept. and is a beautiful 10" bladed Bowie with a gorgeous black Buffalo horn handle and white sheep horn spacer. I did not take a pic of it before giving it to him but I have a picture of one very similar to it on my other computer. I will try to post it later.

Nice knife mrgooch. That's some funky box elder for the handle - I like it.
