What, or do you, include in your Bug-Out-Bag in regards to useful information?

I keep an edible and medicinal wild plants books.

Depends upon where I am. A very good book on plants for the area is always good, and for N. America I have a decent set of plants cards also.

However, a good novel or an interesting, in depth book on history can take a lot of stress off.

When traveling in Muslim areas I always keep a copy of the Koran in my gear.

us army spec forces medical handbook, i wore out 4 of these when i was in the army covers enerything from birth to drugs ya gotta love it :)

That is an excellent book. I keep a copy of it alongside a copy of Dorland's Medical Dictionary, which is physically the same height and width and they pack well together. Dorland's is a top notch quick reference with color plates on anatomy, etc.

As far as Medicine goes, I've taken a Wilderness First Responder course from NOLS --> www.nols.edu. And they publish a lot of good medical books. Not sure how they compare with others though.

Great course:thumbup:. The military text are hard core field medicine and blurs the lines between practicing DR and first aider in the military.

No civilian group has come up with anything close to this level of text for civilian field medics. Nor do they want to as this is well beyond the scope of a many Dr's let alone a paramedic or first aider.

That said I own most mentioned and they are great to have as a reference library if needed.

I keep The SAS Survival Guide, A Petersons Guide to edible Plants, An ALS field guide, and Of course A harmonica Song book.

An out of date text original is early 80's this is a reprint. Some of the info in it will even kill you.
The updated version is well over $100 and worth 10 times that, the finest book of its kind.

Ya they have one being sold by a joker for $500.:jerkit: It is kinda rare to find them now but not that rare. I paid $125 shipping in for mine in 2002.

Some sell it as a kit a kit with cd, workbook etc... You realy only need the book. Thereis a newer edition comming out in the next year I think so you may want to hold off. The latest version is 2001.

If you want to know how to take an appendix out or perform a cesarean section in the field:eek: and everything in between this is the book.

Since accidentally poking myself in the forearm while being stupid I've become a bit more interested in first aid. Thankfully I didn't hit anything important but it was quite deep. I've noticed that a lot of the military manuals are public domain and available freely online as pdfs. Some of them are pretty big so I'd just as soon buy a copy if I were going to read it cover to cover, but if anyone is interested in getting a sense of what's in them here are some links.

I found the Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook here:
http://www.nh-tems.com/manuals.html
WARNING: this is a 40mb file so I didn't link straight to it. Just go to 'SOF Medical Handbook' if still interested

And some of the older manuals, including the U.S. Army Special Forces Medical Handbook here:
