Bob Lum, knifemaker extraordinaire, passed away quietly yesterday, 12/4/07 at 12:00 PM.

For those that did not know Bob, this from his website:

"I have been making knives since October 1976 and I am a full time maker. I grew up in Astoria, Oregon. Fishing and hunting in the Pacific Northwest has given me an appreciation for a fine knife....I am not a high production shop for I try to do as much as possible in house."

He was truly one of the best, and his contributions will be missed, his passing is a great, great loss to the community.

Sadly,

STeven Garsson

Rest in Peace Mr Lum.

You were an inspiration to many.

Bob was a great knifemaker and a fine gentleman. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family,

Jerry and Jennifer Busse

He may be gone but will not soon be forgotten. How many of us will leave such an extensive legacy? I'm moving my Spyderco Lum Chinese folder to the top of my EDC rotation. RIP.

Rest in peace Mr. Lum...

"Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

Fading light, dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night.

Thanks and praise, for our days,
'Neath the sun, 'neath the stars, neath the sky;
As we go, this we know, God is nigh."

Thanks for passing this along, STeven. I had known that this was imminent.

Yes, absolutely a pinnacle maker in the knifeworld, whose knives had really become VERY highly sought-after in the last few years. They will be ever more so now.

There wasn't a finer man on the planet. Calm and understanding, and especially knowledgable about photography (my dialogs with him.)

Bob won the Wooden Sword award in the 1983 Knives Annual. He goes back a lonnnng way.

My best to his family.

Bob has been in my thoughts and prayers for awhile. May he find comfort and peace where he now resides.

Bob, we'll miss you.

Bob will live on through the memories he gave us all. I have enjoyed meeting him and owning his work. A truly great person and artist. He will be missed :(

I can not believe that he is gone. RIP Mr. Lum!! This is a great loss to the knife community.

Sad news.
Would somebody post some pix of his knives, a master cutler would appreciate that.

Thanks for sharing, STeven...

I hadn't known he was ill, as last I saw him was, IIRC, the OKCA show this year. While I saw little of his work live, I have been aware of both his quality and his reputation for many years. He was both a fine maker and a fine gentleman.

He will be missed.

R.I.P.

That is very sad. Unfortunately, as our craft/hobby becomes more mature, we are naturally losing more of the pioneers every year.

Thanks for sharing Steven.

Never met Mr. Lum, but have heard many good things about him.
R.I.P.
