bobcat question

I've never seen one, seen tracks, scratches on trees, and some hair once that could have been. thought i saw one once but not sure enough to say i did, probably a grey fox,(it was running through the woods before sun up in turkey season) it was probably a fox, or bigfoot.

if it is a bobcat and its living in your barn this time of year its probably female and has kittens already. odds are it will move them as soon as it can. count yourself lucky if you see it or the kittens. it'll move by itself.

may want to call the DNR to find out what the laws are. here in Ohio you can't just shoot things because its on your property.

I personally havent seen it, but My neighbors have, it was running across a road and then some people working out there did as well, they were using power equipment....my guess is something with the noise startled it

it may not be seen again, who knows.

I am leaning more towards relocating right now, if I can manage to trap it...but I know one thing, I dont want to be the person that opens the cage

I'd go the live trap route. In some states fish and game services are few and far between due to budget cuts.

In TN any animal that poses a threat to you or your property can be dealt with any way you choose. It's not illegal to dispatch the animal if you need to. Any wild animal setting up housekeeping in or around your barn can easily pass on zoonotic diseases to any living thing nearby. Parasites in their scat can be transferred by touching anything that comes in contact with it, like a tractor tire you lean against, or a ball the kids are playing with. As long as you aren't going to sell the pelt it doesn't have to be tagged by TWRA. I have a fox problem right now and when my sights are on it, it's going down. My wife was within 2 feet of it a couple days ago as it was trying to run off with one of my chickens. You just do what you HAVE to do to get rid of it, whether lethal or non-lethal. It would definitely go on my wall.

Unless you have livestock in your barn consider that bobcat an asset. Bobcats are harmless to humans and most pets, they are good to keep rodents and diseases to a minimum because these cats hunt much like house cats. In many ways they are nothing more than a really extra large house cat and like other cats bob cats are very clean and will not soil the barn as it is his living room.

You mention that you have a ground hog problem. Your new guest will rid you of your ground hogs, and keep the barn clear of any other rodent include mice and rats. Be glad you have a cat like that in your barn, wish we had one that would stay around here to clear the mice and endless squirrels.

my guess is that it is not a bobcat in the first place, but a feral tom.

My thought too. Never known a bobcat to move into a barn, they are way too wild for that. I've also never heard of one being a threat to children and we have a large population in this part of the world.

Everyone seems to think wild predators, wolves, bears, cougars, coyotes, and bobcats are wonderful until they move to close to THEM! Eating some ranchers' livestock, now that is really not a problem.

Trapping and relocating is very easy to do. I hunt in a area with a lot of Bobcat's and they are much more afraid of me, then I am of them. I hear a lot of people complaining about feral Hog's however, they will shoot Bobcat's, not realizing that Bobcat's predate feral hog's and are one of the few animal's that will. I have witnessed it first hand. Bobcat's, like all wild animal's, have a purpose so, I would atleast try and relocate instead of just killing it. I have never heard of anyone being attacked by a Bobcat or anyone being scared of them around here.

ya, I am leaning on relocating....though, idk where I would release it at

and super X, if there were hogs on our land, depending on the size of the group there, there wouldn't be any left to mess with our land in a couple weeks lol, 30-06 with a good scope every night till they are gone....but then again, we dont have hogs so I have nothing to wory about....yet

hey crazy, what about putting up a trail/game camera and find out exactly what it is before you do something about it?? i would be more weary of a bobcat than a feral cat. just sayin'.

If I had a game camera, it would be set up by now

Oh well, I may have to get one whenever i get the chance (aka whenever I get the money/stop spending money on knives)

My offer to accept the Bobcat is contingent on it definately being a "threat to neighbor kids."

Can't you test this, and find out?! I need that thing quite badly, if it is a proven kid mauler.

I have lived in Virginia all of my life and know no one who considers bobcats to be a threat to them of their children. They are very "private" animals and sightings are rare in most areas even for people who spend a lot of time in the woods.
Virginia has over 1.5 million acres of National Forrest http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/gwj/home/?cid=stelprdb5313325

Check with the local USDA Forrest Service office http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/f...d.Html&ttype=detail&pname=George%20Washington

Hi, Crazy. You probably are dealing with a Bobcat, if your neighbors are seeing it alot in the daytime this time of year and its big. More than likely its a female and shes pregnant are had a liter of kits already, or its rabid. We have lots of bobcats here in La and I usually kill at least 1 a year have a nice full body mount at office. We kill them on site because their very hard on the turkeys and also on fawns, just like coyotes but not quite as bad. Their more or less nocturnal for the most part but will move good early dawn to about an hour after sun up and dusk or about an hour before sunset, i've never seen broad daylight or midday.

If your trying to manage your land for deer and turkey, kill it, they make beautiful mounts. If not then you can try and relocate but chances are if it is a big female that has had kits, she's had them their before and will return unless the thing is moved FAR away. Bad picture but great mount, she was a small one and weighed in at about 25 pounds.

I haven't tried managing anything on our land yet, but I will sooner or later, both Deer and Turkey.

I knew I could count on my friends here at Bladeforums.

Things have changed around here recently, though. The "neighbor kids" who were disassemblig my outbuildings in order to burglarize them had a change of heart recently (insert evil laugh).

They must have seen the error of their ways, purely out of the goodness of their hearts.

Anyway, I no longer have a use for an angry one, but would love one of the kittens. I'll raise it with my pack of hunting dogs (Chessadors), and brainwash it to think it's a Lab. They like some cats.

I wonder if Iams makes Bobcat Chow?

If there are kittens, I would like nothing more than to have one as a pet. though for some reason i feel it is illegal....oh well.

on a side note, since i am still at college, a friend of the family was asked to try and catch it. there is now a trap and a game camera in our barn. We will se what happens

also.....how did you change those kids minds?
Would I feel sorry for them?
At my house, their minds would have been changed with a paintball gun or sling shot

I'm a hunter, so I treated it like any hunting situation-- if you can predict your prey's actions, behavior and location, you can definately destroy them.

Short answer: The Little Darlings were on probation, so I made a big scene with Cops at the site. I made sure they could see me gesturing towards their house... They freaked at the possibility of a probation violation and VANISHED, without a trace. They're probably still running. I see they paused long enough to put a huge star-shaped break in their back sliding door.

I then reassembled my plywood outbuilding with square drive stainless screws and polyurethane construction glue. I then ate up several of the screw heads' drive slots by overspinning my square drive bit in them [to make future midnight disassembly harder].

Feel sorry for the bobcat that won't get to feast on those Little undocumented Darlings.

Don't put up with bullcrAp, make a big embarrassing scene with lights, guns and squalling police radios.

Mine Too!!!!!!!
I'm a pretty hard-core Cat hunter so I feel pretty confident saying that.
Plus the fact that Cats are deathly afraid of people and Dogs.

All that said,,,,, if you're still convinced that there's really a Cat in there, do a search for the trappers association in your state and have someone that knows what they're doing get involved. I'm sure they'll tell ya that what I say is true as well how many years it took em to actually catch their first Cat.
Lots of good info about Cats on Trapperman.com and BigGameHoundsmen.com.
Luck
Charlie

PS,,, if the Cats really do live in barns in VA, I'll be moving there.:D
