looking at the website, and reading the back posts.

Anyone (Bobwhite?) have any comments about the HI bolo?

That's a dirty trick, 45... I looked on the website, and could find no mention of a bolo ,one of my all-time favorite knives.

Can you provide more specific information?

Bobwhite had a few comments about the Bolo there, said it balanced like he hoped it would, swung nice, etc.;) I agree that an update on it would be nice though.:D

So, if Mr. White (esq) really hated it as much as he wrote, I would be glad to take if off his hands. Or wherever he is storing it. I love bolos. Ever since I read "Heiro's Journey", by Sterling Lanier. Post apocalypse SF/fantasy.

Bought a couple from a site suggested by Hollowdweller:

Would MUCH rather have an HI version, though.

I am only about an hour from this place. Might have to stop there sometime, that big bolo looks good(the others do too for that price :) ).

I bought 1 each of styles 2 and 3. Very nice to have around the yard for chopping compost and things. Will probably buy styles 1 and 4 in the future. I spent a lot of time polishing the style 2 with sandpaper and a buffing wheel. Looks like a horn-handled khuk now. Except for the blade, of course.

Ahhh, the "table leg special" AK bolo. I still have it. Since then I thinned out the handle some so it fits my grip a bit better. It is a good knife and I think I have the only one ever made. I found a table leg in the trash walking to work one day and fished it out to whittle. While I was walking along, I started swinging it around absently and marveled at how good it felt in the hand. I figured that in steel, as a bolo, it would keep the same feel once I carved the wood away for the model as the full leg felt. I made the model and sent it off. There were no other takers at the time, so I got the one prototype. It turned out the way I wanted, more or less. It is about as traditional bolo as the AK bowie is traditional bowie knife, way overbuilt. The flat section on the back where a swedge would be on a bowie is hardened and can be used as a hammer. It does a fair improvised froe using that to whack on and can even do a passable spokeshave impression. The only improvement I'd make is to have it be full tang, chiriwa style. Sorry guys, I am not parting with it, but if the kamis kept the model, and there are a few takers, Yangdu might order a run of them. It was my one attempt at knife design/model building so far, I started a dirk but never finished it. That Patang on the HI page covered what I was after, but I never got one. I was going to do a model for Not2sharp for a double length AK bowie and never finished it, that stubby bowie on that HI page resulted from the Kamis impression of what was asked for. If we try to order some chiriwa bolos who knows what we would get. :D

Bet Yangdu groaned when she read that one!

I'd sure sign up for it.

I got to handle Dan's Patang at last years MWKK...*very* nice. That'd be one to have a run of made up. Of course, I'd probably go for the HI Bolo too...

I'm such a slut when it comes to these things...I'll put out for almost anything.

I don't know, I bet she just thinks, "jeez, what are these guys wanting now?"

They got her done. :p (one of these days I post a photo from a different angle to better show the deep double fullers)

Uncle Bill said that when the Kamis got the model they had a sort of "WTF?!?!?" reaction to it. Like "These guys are nuts, but if that is what they want..."
I honestly doubt they still have the model, and the special order thing has kind of been put aside in the last couple years. It was causing some problems with people saying they wanted them and then backing out later, I believe.

I'd love a BK Bolo if they make more. :D A few years ago 3 of us placed orders for a BK Bolo so Uncle Bill asked the Kami's to make 4 or 5. A few months later he recived a package with 4 custom Puukos with BobWhite's name on them. Some one had ordered some special Puuko's some time earlier and some how they showed up late with the wrong name. :grumpy:

If another run is done of them, Put Me On The List! :D I'll take one.

All that is the reason you need a model. Even then you might not get what you wanted. The whole thing is an exercise in cross cultural communications. I'd be happy to see some made up, but I wouldn't blame Yangdu a bit for saying no. It is funny to me that there is interest now, because there was so little interest at the time. I didn't even know three others had requested them, though I sort of remember the pukko mixup. I chalked it up to Uncle Bill ordering them to see if there would be takers, not that they had been requested by individuals. I think that is indicative of special runs altogether, only the Cantinaistas want them, I don't think there are others buying them. It is a special service for our little core group of HI fans. The Yvsa Cherokee Special, AK bowie, and the Seax are the most succesful I'd say. Followed by the Cherokee Rose, Pen Knife and the Foxy Folly probably. The bolo never took off. I would love one of the Patang and a not2sharp short sword bowie, though they never took off either.
