Bocote scales

I searched the forums and found very little about bocote. Has anybody used it before and know of any problems I may encounter? I got 14 pairs of scales from a $15 piece of wood. The pattern reminds me of damascus.

Unfortunately, from how I had to cut it, I have three sets of scales that are only 7/8" wide. Any idea what I could use them for? Anybody have a WIP that could use scales that small?

They use bocote in a lot of duck and goose calls. It's very nice when finished out.

Those scales that are 7/8" wide could be kept for use on small folders, or cut into cubes and rounded for accent beads to put on knife lanyards.

use those small scales for small ute or paring knives.

I like to finish it with a 50/50 mix of bees and carnauba waxes. Clean the glue surface with acetone to remove some of the oil before gluing.

Here's a pic of a backsaw that I rehandled with it.

I've used it quite a bit. It is pretty oily. I finish it with several coats of Birchwood Casey's Gunstock Wax. It tends to darken with age and exposure to sunlight.

In my knife set I only have 1 paring knife. My set has:

1)Chef
1)Slicer
1)Serrated Bread/All Purpose
1)Paring
6)Steak

I think most average knife sets have just 1 paring

As for the "narrow" stock: My recommendation is to cut it into smaller sections, and use them for a stacked handle.

Los Angeles: PM me your address and I will mail you a couple pieces. They are 1" x 2.5", but would look good stacked. They are right in the middle of the picture above.

Grizzly: I forgot them at home, I will ship them tomorrow.

I also have a couple 2.375" x 2.375" pieces if anyone is interested, and at least one pair of 7/8" scales left. They are the square pieces on the right side of the picture.

I'll take em...what do I do? how much? Bocote be one of my favs:thumbup:

Which ones? They're free because I am not a dealer on here and don't want to get in trouble with the mods. However, I have limited supplies because I just don't want the extra pieces to go to waste. Don't worry, I am keeping two sets of scales for myself. I have to make one more kitchen knife to this set later when the steel becomes available.

One more practice knife and I will start my first WIP, the s30v just arrived!!!!!

You'll notice a new picture at the top of the thread. These are the pieces I have left over. The one on the bottom left is taken. Please tell me what size you want. I hate going to the post office, so I only want to go once. I still need a mailing address from Rayban, PM it to me please.

hah, I just bought some of this stuff from the scrap bin at my local hardwood place.I think I'm gonna finish my camp knife with this tonight.

There's an idea. How many paring knives belong in a proper kitchen knife set?

Depends on how many drawers you have in your kitchen! Nothing wrong with having more than one and there's no such thing as too many.

I just shipped the bottom scales, the slabs on top are still available if anyone wants them.

When I cut out the blanks, what do I do with the scrap s30v? Do forgers collect it to make damascus from or is it just useless scrap?

Got the Bocote in the mail yesterday...thanks so much!!

If you ever need to move any more, keep me in mind, I love the stuff!!
