BodyCote / New knife coatings

After going through a myriad of topics on this matter, I haven't seen a *current* unified body of knowledge on this matter.

It seems a while ago the best route in surface coatings w/ BodyCote was a hard chrome undercoat topped w/ boron carbide to prevent rusting and scratching. Now it seems it's favorable to apply a new diamond-like coating over those first two. Is the top layer the same as their ceramic coating done by BodyCote's sister company K-TECH?

I'm also curious as to what condition you send your blades in and how they *can* come back. Example: If I send a Benchmade 710 M2 blade coated in BT2, I've heard that underneath the Benchmade BT2, the blade looks like hell. I've also heard that BodyCote can abrade away any surface coatings, but will this be enough to give the blade a finished look? I would tend to think merely sandblasting away the BT2 could leave behind crappy looking steel. From what I've seen of the DLC (Diamond Like Coating, bottom knife in the picture below) it's much darker than the typical boron carbide, but still shows the logo well (and therefore any imperfections in a blade sent to BodyCote). If this is the case, and the blade needs to be "finished" before sending it to BodyCote, how would you suggest going about this? Different methods of dressing the steel that I've heard about include stone washing, bead blasting (satin look?), and mirror polishing. I'd think mirror polishing the blade could be a viable option for those wanting to do it themselves, using increasingly finer sandpaper and finishing w/ metal polishing compound (like Mothers)?

This all seems quite facinating to me and any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
JK

Boron Carbide and DLC Diamond coatings are very thin, 80 millionths thick. They take on the finish of the blade. For instance the bottom DLC coated knife has a 2 tone finish, the blade bevels are satin hand rubbed and the rest is bead blasted. A mirror polished blade coated with BC or DLC will be like a black mirror.

Both BC and DLC are great coatings, I think the BC coating wears a tiny bit better but the DLC is better for corrosion resistance and slicker.

I am not sure what the Benchmade blade looks like under the coating, but whatever finish it has is what it will look like with the DLC or BC coating.

DLC is not like the Tec 12 coating, Tec 12 is a ceramic type coating and DLC is a diamond deposit.

Credit for the picture included w/ my original post goes to Mr. Simonich (great looking, and I'm sure functioning, stuff he has) from the "I have one word for Darrel Lewis and Bodycote......................" thread.

@Knife11, "yeah, yeah, yeah, But does it rub off???" Quoting Darrell Lewis in the "Boron Carbide Coatings" thread,
If you were to hit it with a ball peen hammer and only deformed the substrate the coating will be deform also. If you abuse or remove the base material the coating will be removed with the blade material. At only 2 microns boron carbide can withstand great amount of force without debonding.

For reference, these threads served to help me the most:

I have one word for Darrel Lewis and Bodycote......................
My MT-L is back and boy is it cool.
Sending my 730CFHS to Bodycote...have ?'s.
M2 and corrosion resistance?

Again, thank you for the replies.

NO,NO,NO, Knife 11 it doesn't Rub Off. During the past two years
Bodycote has coated almost 40,000 knife blades for Custom Makers and Factory's alike without the coatings rubbing off. Maybe you should do a search on Boron Carbide and see how many customers of Bodycote have complained!!!

I guess I didn't really mean rub off. really I meant does it come of in the same manner as th BC2 on Benchmades????

What is the price difference between the BC and DLC for a folder with a 4" blade?

Nonbox the cost is about the same for both Boron Carbide and Tungsten DLC for someone sendig only one blade the charge is $25.00 which includes return shipping.

Darrell is going to refinish my 1911 in DiamondBlack - I'll stress the finish by running 1000 rounds of .45 through it after I get it back. I have every confidence that it will handle it with aplomb.

Rob, I think Benchmde's BT2 is a Teflon Based coating process
thats sprayed and baked. Hell Spark I bet Simonich could put a 1000 rounds through your gun on one Drunken Friday Night.

Darrell Lewis

Knife 11, if BC2 is a teflon based coating, then no, the BC or DLC will last much, much, much longer given the same uses. An example would be I can shave off the teflon and epoxy coatings with a sharp knife, with BC and DLC the coating will actually wear away the hardened steel and not scratch the coating. Think diamond and ceramic!

Darrell, Friday nights are out, I have my Drunkken Toosday Neyte shutes down at the salloonn. 1000 rounds ought to about do it though! Send me Sparks gun! :D

Hey Darrell, how about a DLC bolt and carrier for my machine gun?

Thanks for the comparision I know about Ceramic cause I work with my father in our carpet store and we ofcorse sell all flooring.:)

I dunno, Darrel, I don't think I'd trust Rob with a firearm after he's been liquored up. I've poured him out after a long night of drinking and he wobbles a bit too much for me to trust him with my fine firearm. He just might shoot off something important. :D

Now that you can do AR Uppers, though... man, that would be a hell of a test. Maybe you should do Rob's rifle? I heard he puts a couple thousand rounds down range when trying to plug a single gopher (or biker ;))

Kevin

I wonder how it would work on the baffles inside a suppressor???????

Rob you want a coated Machine Gun, bring it with you next month
to the open house and I'll coat it while you wait. That sould be the ultimate test and again you'll be the first. I'm testing supressors
with a major manufacture and I'll keep you updated.

Darrel Lewis

Spark, if I shoot it off I will have it sewed back on and have Darrell coat with DLC it and it will be hard all the time! Wait, that could be a problem..........

Hmmm, must strip many shots gun and take to Darrell.......:p
