After going through a myriad of topics on this matter, I haven't seen a *current* unified body of knowledge on this matter.
It seems a while ago the best route in surface coatings w/ BodyCote was a hard chrome undercoat topped w/ boron carbide to prevent rusting and scratching. Now it seems it's favorable to apply a new diamond-like coating over those first two. Is the top layer the same as their ceramic coating done by BodyCote's sister company K-TECH?
I'm also curious as to what condition you send your blades in and how they *can* come back. Example: If I send a Benchmade 710 M2 blade coated in BT2, I've heard that underneath the Benchmade BT2, the blade looks like hell. I've also heard that BodyCote can abrade away any surface coatings, but will this be enough to give the blade a finished look? I would tend to think merely sandblasting away the BT2 could leave behind crappy looking steel. From what I've seen of the DLC (Diamond Like Coating, bottom knife in the picture below) it's much darker than the typical boron carbide, but still shows the logo well (and therefore any imperfections in a blade sent to BodyCote). If this is the case, and the blade needs to be "finished" before sending it to BodyCote, how would you suggest going about this? Different methods of dressing the steel that I've heard about include stone washing, bead blasting (satin look?), and mirror polishing. I'd think mirror polishing the blade could be a viable option for those wanting to do it themselves, using increasingly finer sandpaper and finishing w/ metal polishing compound (like Mothers)?
This all seems quite facinating to me and any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
JK
