BodyCote / New knife coatings

These coatings do rub off thats for sure.
I resharpen the blades after the boron and the dlc coating with silicon carbide belts.

Thats tough!

So Who do I contact about getting a knife done?

And could they do the entire knife, like my Mayo?

Ok, here are a few blades in BC over different finishes, hope that helps.

From left top to right bottom:

BM 710 - BC over blasted finish. I've sent BT2 coated blade, they blasted it and the applied BC;

BM 770 - BC over satin finish. Factory knife;

BM 730 HS - BC over almost mirror polished finish;

BM 140 HS - BC over mirror polish;

Here's the polished Nimravus before it was sent to get BC coating:

2 Nimravi and 710, left Nimravus has BC over mirror polished finifh, right one, BC over blasted and 710 is the same, BC + bt2 blasted off.

Nice blades, Alligator. I'll also say that Gator's reivew of the 710 helped steer me in the right direction w/ my purchase and I suggest anyone read it, especially if they're also interested in BodyCote's coatings. I spoke w/ Darrell Lewis a couple days ago and I can say he's a great guy that took time to *discuss* the coatings rather than just be a talking marketing head.

mschwoeb: From what I understand, you want to contact Olga Smith @ BodyCote before you send the bare blade at which time you're able to work out the particulars.

BodyCote is able to sandblast your blades, which, from what I hear, is sufficient to take off the Benchmade BT2 coating and give the blade a satin finish. Alligator, being that you had an M2 blade done, did you opt to having BodyCote remove the BT2 and finish the underlying steel, or did you do prepare the blade beforehand?

Teknical,

The finish underneath the black coating is indeed rough. As I look at my own 710 with the coating wearing off, there are fine thin grooves running across the blade.:barf:

If I did the bodycote thing, I would probably try to hand finish the blade with at least a rough satin finish. If you are not really into the looks, blasting off the finish is a way to go.

Personally I am very interested in having my 710 coated. Not just for the added durability but the fact that the the designers felt the need to put thier name in giant letters across the blade. Now, I am an acomplished artist and I know about the desire to sign your work but you wont see my name covering 40% of one of my oil paintings. Truthfully the 710 aint bad as far as logos and names but the 705 was completly enveloped by the Mchenry and Williams name. Spainish cultery seems to be the worst in this respect...Aitor and Muela try hard to fill up the whole blades with writing, brand names descriptions, addresses of the factory etc.

Continuing on the subject: I am very intrigued by the irredescant coating I see on certain blades such as the Kershaw Rainbow Leek, and the top knife in the first pic posted on this thread. I dont have much desire for my blade to be black and unreflective in a folder, and I enjoy having something that is unique and interesting to the common layman. I have browsed the Bodycote site and plan to ask them how to prepare the knife and other specifics, but I would like to know what I am asking for instead of just saying "I want the pretty sparkly rainbow shiney coating of colorful happiness".

I imagine it is a more expesive coating so if any of you knowlegeable ones want to disuade me by telling me the price of this colorful coat, it will save me from finding out on my own that I am too pathetically poor to get it done.

Thankkee in advance.

BTW Gator I am much impressed with your reviews, I have read them all and they seem practical and unbiased. I cant help but notice your "Halo" avatar as well. I asume it is in relation to the excellent X-box game and want to tell you to hold on to that gaming system if you own it. In a few months X-box owners will have the pleasure of sending me personally, ala rocket launcher, to my gruesome death on my first video game title. :D
