I have a ZDP composite Shallot from Kershaw. I think my copy has very very high hardness. With the original edge it had some micro fractures. I re-profiled it but cannot get it sharp enough for my liking. My strop does nothing and stones do nothing. Sandpaper kinda works but I think I need a better type. The only thing I own that might work is a pencil diamond rod and I just cant get precise enough with it.
I hope the D2 is softer (lol at these hardnesses) then my ZDP. The best answer I have seen so far is to use the Spyderco sharpmaker with diamond rods. I will probably get a set at some point.
I use Shapton brand Glasstone waterstones. The ones made for us 'Mericans were formulated for use with D2 and A2 and I've found they work on ZDP-189 and dreaded S30V, too. And easier sharpening steels just get sharper faster. Wet/dry sandpaper works great, too, just keep it wet or it dulls instantly. Good luck!
