What kind of toughness need 2-3 inch dia. screw for fed plastic molding machineswith a 35% carbide volume, I'm guessing it will chip if you sneeze too hard on it? : p
but seriously, I think they've all gone too far on the extreme wear resistance side with these new steels (to the detriment of toughness)
Nice one, once again.I published my analysis of the steel: https://knifesteelnerds.com/2019/05/06/bohler-m398/
Nice one, once again.
I think I'll stick with lower wear steels, as I already hate reprofiling M390. I'd love to get some more options for stainless steels with more toughness, as chipping is the number one problem I have with stainless super steels.
I'm totally cool with the idea of AEB-L, just never got a chance to use it on something like a fixed blade or rough use tool. I think it would be great for that.the answer is aeb-lor 13c26 or sandvik 14c28n (which is different from aeb-l but should be very similar in terms of toughness)
I know those are not 'super' steels in the sense they are not made with pm tech...
but on that end, s35vn is still one of the best all around choices since it was designed to have more toughness than s30v but keep the wear resistance
I wish they used aeb-l with a high amount of added vanadium... and the thing is, it exists, but I never see it used

it would be interesting if they did a pm version of this ; )

For folders, I'm okay with S35VN, but I'd love to see where we go in the future and if I can get more toughness with the same wear resistance (nitrogen steels pls).
That's what I'm talking about. Thanks!Try Vanax SuperClean. It will hold an edge a lot better than AEB-L, it's almost as tough and it's more stain resistance. Plus, it's fine grained and easy to put on a keen edge.
I was in contact with Bohler and made a video about M398.Nice one, once again.

Well... According to Bohler and many others... It is a sin to hammer and forge a powder steel. Simply because it has a different structure. Knives should be made from sheets, not from bars.same technique as Denis Frolov
The first bars were delivered in April to the buyers that bought M398 long time ago. New deliveries are scheduled for this Summer (second half).C - 2.7%, Cr - 20%, Mo - 1%, V - 7.2%, W - 0.7%, S - 0.5i%, Mn - 0.5%
-some notes from random Russian forum posts... take with a grain of salt.
So far, this steel is only in diameters 35.8 and 38
Rounding up, 74euro per kg
Rolling is not an option, they write that during cold rolling is prone to cracking.
-Denis Frolov has some m398 roundbar stock. check out his instagram
