Greetings to the entire knife community. Good news ) Cutting tests now available with English subtitles! Please let us know about, if you are interested in any of this info. Most of attention in our knives we put into heat treatment, because the main function of any knife is cutting. Denis Frolov @yanhook151984 is in charge of this complex and responsible for this entire process. His logo - Yanhook, you can see on all our knives, as a guarantee of quality heat treatment. His author's technique - includes a whole complex of thermo and cryo❄️ processing, including multi-stage thermal cycling. As a result, steel acquires good performance characteristics. During this process, Denis achieves high hardness (HRC) and ductility. Ruslan Kiyasov @ruslankiyasov is a professional sharpener, and he also conducts his You Tube channel, where he tests various knives. The testing technique of Ruslan is aimed at checking the knife comprehensively. In his tests, he looks at how a knife cuts, his testing technique allows him to evaluate not only steel, but also the ergonomics of the knife and other performance characteristics. So far, only one test involving the Chest knife with N690 steel has been translated into English. Soon we are planning to finish the translation of tests involving the Svarn II knife with steel M390 and Svarn II custom with steel CPM S110V. Link to the cutting test, in the comments.
Here's the video

just turn on CC closed captioning and choose English.

I would not consider N690 to be a budget steel. I would not consider to to be of the top tier of steels either. It's likely somewhere in the middle.

If I had to choose between the two, I would unequivocally opt for the M390 and family each and every time.

That being said, I wouldn't be opposed to having a knife made in N690.

I have a couple Kershaw dashes and a Hype (n690) that I used at work for a while....it does hold a good edge but not quite as good as s30v or S35VN, and M390 is another step up from those.

I would pay the small difference to get m390. For knives at or below $100 n690 is a good steel, as are vg-10 and 440c.

I have not heard of M390 steel yet. I have never seen a knife offered that is made with M390 steel. Would love to get a knife made with this type of steel, M390, since everyone is talking about how good it is.

But I do love my 440C steel and D2 steel knives. I love my N690 steel knives too!

Thanks for telling about the M390 steel!

you need to spend more time reading here :) lol, tons of m390 blades everywhere, I'm a fan of Bradford's designs with them (guardian 3, 4 etc)

They are very different. It would depend on the tasks. I'd get both personally due to the differences and the tasks each can do. You'll have to be more informative with your request ... Id suggest starting a new thread as this one's not idea for your question.

N neeman : Either of those will work, they're really both just tools for cutting stuff. You will adjust your cutting technique to maximize the performance of either, in YOUR hand, but either will serve well. I like the Ranger, for a number of reasons. One is that I prefer carbon steel for an all around user. That's not to say there's anything wrong with stainless, my EDC for the last year or so, and for the foreseeable future, is a 4-1/2" x .130" S35VN fixed blade. I considered several knives in N690, as well as other steels, before I got this one.

Not that it matters, but I buy knives for the design and execution, not for the steel. A mediocre design, with decent steel properly heat treated, is still a good knife. Look at the Buck 119, for instance. There is absolutely nothing special about the base model. Black phenolic handle, aluminum guard and pommel, and 420HC blade. But, with their heat treatment, it has become practically a legend. Not quite a Kabar, but a damn good tool. And NOBODY with any credibility claims the 420HC Buck 110 is gas-station knife. More important than which alloy is whether or not you can sharpen it. If you can, ANY of the better mid-grade or super steels will work for you. Don't overthink it. If you like a knife, GET the knife. Only YOU can decide what works for YOU.

sometimes I think the knife world throws out these super steels just to sell more knives.

I mean...look at the Rolex Sub. A classic. So how do they sell more? Well they come out with a version with a green bezel; and then a green face; and then blue...etc. GOTTA HAVE THE SET!!

So how do knife companies sell more knives? Well...you know...you gotta have the latest and greatest super steel....the knife you bought last year pales in comparison!!! You need the new model!!!

Of course this is tongue-in-cheek. There are advantages to certain steels but for 90+ percent of users, there is probably not a major difference in our usage. Like others have said...don't get hung up on the steel. If you like the knife and it has a usable steel...you're good to go.

Kinda makes you think how our fathers and grandfathers could have possibly survived with just plain 'ol carbon blades! Oh my..the horror!

FWIW there are two YouTube videos by "blackforestghost1" (he's the Austrian knife maker Armin Stütz); one demonstrating the N690 in practical bushcraft tasks (if you consider cutting copper cables part of bushcraft:)) and the other punching into car hoods. The steel appears to do hold up nicely in his field tests.

I would have hoped he already made up his mind since it's been almost two years...

I've had a bunch of Bradford G3's and maybe one of them in N690. It's a decent steel, but life is short and so I
set my sails on M390.
However, I am presently carrying my cross-draw G3 in Vanadis 4E Extra Clean, which is a great carbon steel. I love this steel.

Not sure how this happened. Might have accidentally replied to a thread I found on a search engine thinking I was in today's GKD! I'll put the blame on medicinal cannabis rather than blatant stupidity. This time. I'm as likely as not to be afflicted by one or the other at any given moment in time.

EDIT: Oh, my apologies to all!
