Boiled linseed oil....

Some people use a 50/50 mixture of turpentine and flax/linseed oil, which soaks in faster but then smells like turpentine as it slowly evaporates.

Another option is mixing BLO with mineral spirits. A lot less smell than turpentine.

Been lurking here a while, and just registered so I could post to this thread.
You must have some bad boiled linseed oil!
I installed handmade, unsealed, Spanish terra cotta floor tiles in my kitchen, and they are sealed with BLO, before and after installation. I thought the smell was rather pleasant and "traditional". I put a lot of BLO down, and it's not cheap. I'm thinking you got some bad BLO.

Does anyone use liquied beeswax on the handle?

bad linseed oil, huh? Interesting, and i do believe it. Like i said, the can was rusty so definitely old, as it wasn't kept outdoors. It was in an old hardware store that looked like its been there for a very long time....
thanks for clarifying all that though guys. I am very happy i finally got into axes! Much better than chopping with one of my kukris or thicker machetes...
