Just got my issues of Knives Illustrated and saw a really dumb ad by Boker. Gee let's sell knives using T&A and some silly implied mystery story. How about putting out a decent product at a decent price and saving the ads for pictures of the knives. I know I won't buy a knife based on this kind of ad.

Your right...that is dumb

I cant see Tap Dancers or Acrobats being effective in a magazine ad.
They need to move to be impressive:p .

Stoopid Boker

I just picked up the latest TK magazine and saw one of Böker's new ads. It sure got my attention! :D Their ads don't bother me at all, and while I'm not a big Böker fan, I do own a few of their knives. Still, the ad is not enough to make me run out and get another Böker, but a little T & A never hurt anyone. ;)

Do you mean the add with the blonde ready to torture the guy hanging from his wrists? Yeah, I saw the add, and I thought it was in poor taste. There are lots of ads of a pretty girl holding up the product, but the blonde/torture thing just pushed the envelope.

What really ticked me off was that it looked like my WIFE from the back! Not only am I miffed that she did such a thing in poor taste, but she failed to split the money with me!

Seriously, things like this just escalate. Another knife company will now try to do something more over the top to bring attention to their knife line. After nekkid women and torture, what's left?

I´m embarassed a German knife company shows such poor taste in ads. I just can assure you that Böker is the only German company I can think of at the moment that uses ads like these. Please don´t think many other German company does this on a regular basis or something like that. Almost everything I hear about Böker´s folders is that the liner locks often fail...maybe they should invest a little bit more money into quality management than spending it for this kind of adverising.

There was a long discussion of this now in the community archives. Apparantly Boker has been doing this for a long time...

I thought this was pretty funny, but unlike the previous one where you [presumably] use the knife to "Make Jim build the shelter", I'm not sure I even get the new one with the guy tied up facing the blonde with the jumper cables. Is this supposed to imply that this is really some S&M situation the guy wants to be in? If so, why doesn't he have his clothes off :D

hmm, well anyone know if they make good knives?

I know they make at least one good model as it's used by the GSG-9, but I don't know about the rest.

anyone who buys a product based on advertisment is dim-witted.

Boker makes great fixed and lockback knives.
IMHO they have no business making liner locking folders.
I have the Boker/Brend and the Gemini Angler. Both have paper thin liners, and my Gemini closed on my right index finger when I accidentally hit the blade's spine on a branch while making a light chop on the stem of one of our Saucer Magnolia flowers last year.
The construction of the Brend I can only describe as :barf: . This surprises me still because Mr. Brend is a kick ass knifemaker, then and now.
Oh well...

I posted my feelings in another post on the subject of Boker's stoopid ad campaigns, so I'll spare ya'll that again.

... I think my Boker Speedlock is a good knife.
I like it. In fact very much.
Fits my hand, no sharp corners, easy to sharpen, spare blades available etc. etc.

Another "honest point": just after I got it, it went back to factory.

Too much blade play in every direction - and impossible to take apart.
The screws were stuck.

After returning back to me it's been perfect.

I keep it in my wintercoat's pocket - you know, easy to open and close with frozen fingers.

But I think it's enough Boker to me - I won't buy more Bokers...
... not any kind.

I own a few Bökers and they're okay. The first Böker Brend folder I bought had problems, but I bought another a few months ago with G-10 scales and it has no problems. I also own 2 Top Locks and a Michael Walker designed model 2076 which have no problems.

Or hire an advertising agency/consultant that puts more effort into selling knives than just being "creative". Hey, I'm available at reasonable rates, I'm willing to travel, I speak German, and I know a little bit about knives - put in a good word for me, OK?:D :D :D

(OTOH - I remember that 40 years ago, Der Stern and Der Spiegel were already selling magazines on newstands with naked women on the cover, so what can you expect. )

What is this, a meeting of "Men against ads with hot chicks"? I saw the latest ad, and it didn't bother me a bit. Heck, I even told the wife that she could threaten me with truth serum if she wore that outfit!!!

I haven't seen the ad so I can't comment on it, but I do know what you mean about ads that turn you off instead of motivating you to buy. If I were looking for a mortgage, Ditech.com would be my last choice on the planet. Their TV ads actually offend me with their stupidity. But at least I'll give them credit for the fact that I remember their name even if I wouldn't consider doing business with them. Perhaps Boker was at least successful in grabbing your attention and getting you to mention their name on this board just like I mentioned Ditech's. Maybe the ad was successful after all. Take care.

Nope, it's a meeting of "Men FOR hot chicks whose obvious talents are wasted in BAD ads created by youngsters who couldn't find anything positive to say about Boker knives.";) Could it be that maybe Boker's "ad" people are not "knife" people?

A pregnant woman will read EVERY word of a 10,000-word, full-page newspaper ad about baby care/products.

I'm willing to bet that a knife enthusiast will read EVERY word of a Boker ad that actually talks about the knife - without resorting to such cheap tricks as putting in a giant headline that screams "SEX! followed in tiny letters, "...now that we have your attention...". And if the product benefits make sense, they might actually go out and buy that knife.

Just my .02 - what the heck do I know.

While most of you are too intelligent to run out and buy a knife, car, beer, or anthing else because of SEX in the ad, the truth is that SEX sells. It is the oldest advertising gimmick in existence, and it still works on the masses.

Its a great ad,since ads are meant to grab peoples attention I'd say yes this one works very well! When is the last time a thread was started over an ad?Ok other than Cold Steel. Its been out a few days and already we're talkin'.

Don't care what you say as long as you spell the name right.

It works every time, come out with something sure to offend, let the offended raise a stink which calls it to more peoples attention, so on and so on....

Also if you make ads just for knife enthusiasts your missing the majority of knife buyers. Not all men are knife guys, but at least 90% are girl guys.:)

The ad is a flop. I saw two of their ad in magazines this month (Tactical Knives Booster Cable Girl, and Knives Illustrated Hypodermic Girl) with the "there are times when you could really use a Boker. This isn't one of them" slogan. If it wasn't for this thread I would have forgotten all about them. They are neither provocative enough to be memorable, nor informative enough to promote the product.

Amen.

(BTW, sex doesn't "sell" anything. It gets attention, but it doesn't "sell" anything. Only a product-benefit ad does that - and, yes, those can ALSO be clever and creative. But simply standing a babe in a bikini next to your product is neither.)
