Boker Ads

Of course sex sells things!

Sex sells profilactics, birth control devices and pornography. I dont assoctiate it with knives, but here on the internet I'm sure some whacko does.

If you are gonna bitch about ads being offensively stupid yer in fer a loooong rant. I for one hate those Carls Junior ads that are trying o get you to eat something because it is messy and makes yer breath stink. And pringles commercials, I hate pringles commercials..good chips though.

Anyone here recall Miss Paragon?

I remember the ad well and I still have an X-9 around here somewhere to prove it. :)

But, that ad did things correctly. Yes it had a girl and used sex, but it also featured a product and promoted the company's name. The slogan "fit and ready for survival" could be used to decribed both the girl and the product (a gadget survival folder), and wouldn't we all like to survive with Kelly and .. oh yeah, the X-9 Parabow.

I never heard anybody complain about "Miss Paragon" either. Frankly, these ads don't bother me at all, so I don't understand what the big deal is.

Finally saw the Boker ad. Cut out the girl and posted it on the wall. Nice butt and legs.

But I'm not running out and getting Bokers as a result of it.

I think that's the point many here are trying to make (while others are just regurgitating the same tired advertising myths and cliches).

I ran a very successful advertising agency for over 30 years, and the most intelligent thing my partner ever told a group of Vice-Presidents was, "Remember this -- EVERY one of our clients knows EVERYTHING there is to know about his/her business.....AND about advertising."

If Boker wants to spend money on print ads that we can cut up and put on our walls, hey that's great! But maybe their Marketing/Advertising Director was given that budget and told to increase sales? Is that what is happening? Are they happy spending money so we can discuss their ads here in the forums ("Hey, they're talking about our ad and mentioning the name Boker and....and...")

And then going on to read a few posts here that state, "Yea, loved the babe in the ad...but still wouldn't buy the knife."

Think of all the "clever" ad campaigns you can remember. Many of them also sold a ton of product. But many of them bombed, sales-wise. My favorite example is the Polaroid campaign with James Garner and Mariette Hartley (eons ago;) ). Got tons of positive press, won a slew of awards, had people talking about them at every office water cooler. When the post-campaign research was done, they found out two interesting things: 1. this "clever" and "memorable" campaign did NOTHING to increase sales, and -- wow, I LOVE this -- 2. most people interviewed thought that the ads were advertising Kodak film!

I bet the execs at Polaroid were really pleased!

Too bad someone here can't call up Boker and ask them what this ad is doing for their SALES. And have them prove it.

I'd do it - but I no longer care.
