Boker stag handled Barlow pics and review

It came the other day and I have had it in my pocket every since. The fit and finish on this Barlow is actually quite nice. It isn't the flawless execution of a GEC but it is as good as my case medium stockman. There are slight gaps between the bolsters and the handles, and the stag isn't particularly well matched. This being said, I really have no issue with that. The knife feels really good in the hand and the stag provides a good positive grip. The blades are carbon and both have been polished to a nice finish. Both blades are ground very well and appear centered. The spear point was shaving sharp out of the box, unfortunately however, the pen blade is dull as a butter knife. It is on par with most of the blades I have received out of the box from queen. One well profiled side and one very obtuse side. I reprofiled it on a DMT kit and it came out very nice with a keen edge. Both blades have half stops and at the half position each respective liner dives just ever so slightly down below the liner. Both springs are flush in the fully open and closed positions. Final thoughts? I love the knife. The carbon blades take a great edge and the knife is perfectly sized between the GEC #25 and the queen small Dan Burke Barlow. Considering this knife is at a price point which is less than my case med stockman in red pocket worn bone I feel that it a great value and it is definitely not going to be my last German Boker.

The description sounds exactly like the one I have except for the mismatched scales. I really liked the look of the stag but wanted a clip blade. I ended up getting one with wood scales and like it a lot as well.

Danny,
How do you like their carbon steel? I just finished putting a nice mirror edge on both blades. It took it really easily and is atom splitting sharp now. So far I am impressed. I am thrilled right now with the fact that I have now found another company that makes a nice two blade Barlow with quality materials. Let's face it, Barlow fans don't really have a huge catalog to choose from.

I like that one a lot. I am probably not right in the head but I don't really care for clip points. I'll take a spear point in a heartbeat.

I like the steel on it. It's not as good as GEC's 1095 but I would say it's comparable to Case's CV. I agree that there aren't a lot of current production models available. Bulldog has some single blade models if you like their composite handles. I also like the look of the Russell barlows, which is what I was actually looking for when I found the one I have. I'm pretty sure that they were made by Boker. I've also seen vintage Schrade and Camillus ones available too. I thought about trying one of the new Utica versions as well, but the bolsters were more rounded than I care for on a barlow.

I don't have anything against the spear blades Mack. I just wanted a clip point at that time because it reminded me of my Grandpa's knife.

The Bökers I've been buying recently, about 7 knives, have all been very decent and likeable. They represent good value indeed and deserve more attention. I suspect their steel is softer than GEC's offerings but it's workmanlike nevertheless. Stag on that Barlow looks better than the average CASE stag I say.

The steel actually feels a little harder than case cv. This is, however, just an opinion I have no evidence other than just anecdotal observation. It seems to be harder to sharpen than my case med stockman in cv.

I tried a couple of GEC barlows and found them too small - that looks good - with the advantage that I am already a great fan of traditional Bokers :D :D Thanks for the review

I hear you on the GEC barlows. I tried the #25 and not only was it to small but the spring tension was way to stiff for such a small knife. It was truly a nail breaker. It would be awesome if they released a model that was a half inch larger than the #25.

Nice! How are the backsprings on this one? I have always found the backsprings on German Bokers a little 'soft'. I consider the Vic alox soldier to be about perfect, how would this barlow compare? Nice detail in those pics BTW, thanks.

That is a good looking Barlow. I have one of the faux tortoise shell Bokers and it has the spear main blade as well.

I have seen a grey jigged bone clip point version of this on a well known site, but it is marked out of stock. Hunting about for it elsewhere at the moment :)
