Boker Trance Blade chipping...why?

I purchased a Boker trance and have been EDCing it for a month or so. I had been thoroughly enjoying it.

I was doing some electrical work, and used my Boker to cut a zip tie that was holding a cluster of wires together. I was quite disappointed when a short time later I noticed small chips in the portion of the blade that I used to cut the zip tie.

I can see this happening if I were abusing the blade, but cutting a zip tie is far from abuse.

The blade steel is AUS 8. Is this a common occurrence with this steel? could it be due to bad heat treating? OR might it be due to improper sharpening? (I use a spyderco sharpmaker) Might this be remedied by Bokers costumer service? thanks for your input.

Did you hit metal when cutting the zipties, that's the logical explanation. Or they where wire reinforced ties.

Sometimes a blade might get a little too hot or something while being sharpened and something can happen to the heat treat. A lot of times when these small chips happen, if you sharpen them out and remove the metal right at the edge, the problem goes away.

You can try that and then if it happens again send it back for them to look at. I have had it happen a couple times and once the chips are sharpened out it hasn't happened again. Just a thought...

That edge definitely looks like it came into contact with something other than plastic. I'm not doubting your story, just wondering if it's possible you hit something other than the tie without realizing it. It's hard to say at this point whether it would qualify as a customer service issue, but shoot TJT (Terry) over at the Boker sub forum a PM or email. Boker CS is very good.

Chipping like this case can also be caused by unintentionally twisting while you were cutting the zip ties. After all, the edge is the thinnest part of the blade. Twisting will chip the edge.
