How thick do you usually buy bolster material? I just ordered some 5/16th. 416, but I'm having second-guessing-myself problems.... Seems like 5/8" + .160 for the tang should be enough... that is just over 3/4" thick. Sounds reasonable. Unless it's too thin for a sheath knife... But no, that's right, right?

I know its subjective, but I would appreciate input on what y'all usually build to.

Thanks!

That sounds good. I have seen some knives with 1/8" slabs and bolsters, so 5/16" should be fine.

It depends entirely on the size of the knife. A really slender knife might go with .100 or less for me, others might start out with 1/4". It depends on contour, handle materials and overall design.

I buy most of my bolster stock in 1/4" thickness. I can always mill it or grind it down thinner, but I can't make it thicker very easily.

Thanks all - I just bought to the thickness of most scales I've priced.... Seems like the safest way to go. I appreciate your input. :D :D
