bolt vs semi

They both have their place and for most squirrel hunting situations, the difference is negligible as you have to be patient for the headshot anyway. I always end up going back to my Marlin 60 though. It's nice having those 15rd's in the tube and not having to reload throughout the hunt. Every now and then you get a tree with multiple squirrels and after the first shot, not having to move lets the others settle back down and gives time for the follow up shots.

Ruger 10/22 great semi-auto and many aftermarket options
Savage bolt MarkII now comes with accutrigger which imho is an awesome trigger
Winchester Wildcat bolt also comes with an adjustable trigger
Remington 500 series bolt - 1970s model great with no modifications I believe mine is a 581.

These are .22's that I currently have and they all shoot plenty accurately for squirrels. The Winchester wildcat and the savage both have bull barrels and shoot sub 1 inch groups at 50 yards. The ruger is factory barrel, but a aftermarket hammer which greatly decreased trigger, it shoots just about as well.

I prefer bolt guns for squirrel hunting, just my preference.

Get both...

The Ruger 10/22 is a classic.

I like the Remington 597 also.

For bolt, I like the CZ 455.

Nikon makes a great fixed 4 power for rimfires for about $100.

What is a good max range for squirrel hunting with a stock (non-target) 10-22? I have one with a cheap 3-9 scope and I can usually get most shots in a 2.5" circle from a standing position at 50 yrds, but not much further than that. Do I need more practice or is that about what I should expect?

if i can get a group of 12 shots within a 2"x2" paper grid at 50 yards with the open sight of a single shot Winchester 67A. i'm sure you can do much better, just keep feeding ammo down range and you will get better. the good thing is ammo is cheap cause i have no problems feeding 50-100 shots down range once or twice a week just for fun and to keep the skills in check
