Bolw torch hardening?

Go through the internet and read every tutorial you can find .Read books and get videos too . There's nothing like actually seeing it done. Get cold rolled unless you are going to forge.Annealed is necessary too for the knife steels. All rough grinding , cutting etc is done before hardening. It's best to get long handled tongs, hold it by the tang ( which doesn't have to be hardened.)Quench either point down or edge down to prevent warping.

What Mete said but.......440C is not a good starter steel. Try 01 or 5160. While stainless like 440 can be heat treated at home with some success, it is not good for beginners. Try to stick with the simple carbon steels.
Some of us:p Have never become very fond of mirror knives (smart a$$ for Stainless Steel) anyway!:footinmou

Sorta glanced at this thread before, but didn't really read it.

Now after unsuccessfully normalizing some O1 blades yesteradry though, gave it mroe of a read. THink I have problems worked out on what I did, but still love having info like this around(done own heat treating before, but this is first attampt with my mapp gas torch).

Do any of you guys ever wonder why Max is always picking on me? I think he likes me and is afraid people will find out; he'll be shunned by all.:p
Max stays busy, learning by doing covers a lot of country.
Ya'll have a great holidays.

Aw Mike, I ain't picking on you old buddy. I just know that if you come in and follow up on my loose ends that these folks will have a better chance of learning something. Happy holidays your own self and more of it. :D

Thanks Max. Time flies don't it?
Heat-treat; a simple process can sure get complicated.
I think there is more information in this thread than he can soak up for the next little while. It will all come up again in a month or so. mike

You're right. Next time we have to tell him about quenching just as the lightning strikes and how to temper using the burning fires of your freshly slain enemies! :barf: :footinmou
