A bus was ripped apart in an explosion in central London, an eyewitness told news agency PA, and there were reports of at least one fatality.

PA also quoted Union officials as saying sources had told them there had been at least one explosive device on the Underground.

British Transport Police Surges took place at Aldgate, Edgware Road, King's Cross, Old Street and Russell Square stations.

Scotland Yard confirmed they were assisting with a "major incident" and said there were casualties.

A spokesman said officers were called out to Aldgate station at 8.50am to assist City of London and British Transport Police.

"All of the emergency services are on scene. There have been some casualties. This has been declared as a major incident," said the spokesman. "It's too early to state what has happened at this stage," he said.

It's all gone to shoot.

Presume it's some kind of response to the Olympics, wonder if they had a cell in Paris so they could do the same there if they had won.

"A bus was ripped apart in an explosion in central London today and several blasts rocked the Tube network leaving dozens of people injured.

The Tube blasts at the height of the rush hour on Thursday were initially blamed on a power surge.

But amid the chaos eyewitnesses reported that a packed double decker bus in the Russell Square area had been severely damaged in a blast.

Union officials blamed the Tube blasts on a series of bombs, and Scotland Yard confirmed the bus explosion and said it was dealing with "multiple explosions" in London.

A second bus was reported to have been damaged in Tavistock Square.

Describing the Russell Square blast, eyewitness Belinda Seabrook told the UK Press Association she saw an explosion rip through the bus as it approached the Square.

"I was on the bus in front and heard an incredible bang, I turned round and half the double decker bus was in the air," she said."

Or G8...

Or Iraq...

Let's get our sights on the target before we put our fingers on the trigger.

Coming to a theater near you.Stomp 'em now.

Unlike America we have had a lifetime of terrorist attacks, so expect a measured response.

(Sorry, just re-read that it and it could be taken as inflammatory/derogatory towards Americans. It's not meant too, just can't think how else to phrase it at the moment)

You guys might want to try a less "measured response", so you don't have to suffer through yet another lifetime of terrorist attacks.

Right now the police in London aren't even going so far as to say whether these were terror attacks.
Are bombs on buses and trains a naturally occuring phenomenon in London?

Tony blair says they're terrorist attacks and he's going to lead the g8 then head down to london later today.
He says the g8 meeting will continue without him today.
and the terrorists will never succeed.

Awfull news :(

I'm lucky to live up north atm

Glad to see our fellow UK knife nuts are still with us, lets hear from some more of you.

My condolences and prayers.

My first thoughts this morning were of members here from London.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

Statement claiming London attacks

The BBC has located an Islamist website that has published a 200-word statement issued by an organisation saying it carried out the London bombings.

The organisation calls itself the Secret Organisation Group of al-Qaeda [literally the base] of Jihad Organisation in Europe.

The group not previously been heard of. The website has previously carried statements purporting to be from al-Qaeda. It is not possible to verify such claims published on the web.

This is the full text of the statement:

"In the name of God, the merciful, the compassionate, may peace be upon the cheerful one and undaunted fighter, Prophet Muhammad, God's peace be upon him.

Nation of Islam and Arab nation: Rejoice for it is time to take revenge against the British Zionist Crusader government in retaliation for the massacres Britain is committing in Iraq and Afghanistan. The heroic mujahideen have carried out a blessed raid in London. Britain is now burning with fear, terror and panic in its northern, southern, eastern, and western quarters.

We have repeatedly warned the British Government and people. We have fulfilled our promise and carried out our blessed military raid in Britain after our mujahideen exerted strenuous efforts over a long period of time to ensure the success of the raid.

We continue to warn the governments of Denmark and Italy and all the Crusader governments that they will be punished in the same way if they do not withdraw their troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. He who warns is excused.

God says: "You who believe: If ye will aid (the cause of) Allah, He will aid you, and plant your feet firmly."

That's the first time that I've heard Italy and Denmark mentioned as well.
"The Religion of Peace" once again spreads the joy of knowledge of there
faith with the est of the world.

You have my condolences good people of London.

???

One of the most notable things about this crime is that Londoners have been remarkably calm.

London will beat this.

By tomorrow I would bet all the public transportation systems will be open
and running there routes on schedule. I don't know what they were trying
to prove here.

Certainly no surprise that London would be a target. As the most adamant ally of the US, it's also easily accessible to terrorist groups.
The fact that the G8 is going on in the vicinity is icing on the cake to groups that want maximum exposure.

Can't those guys get anything right? They forgot imperialist, capitalist, running dog, and facist.

Terrorism is cheap warfare and the warfare of cowards.

Just chatted via MSN with my friends in London and they're OK. Hope all our UK members here are safe.

Hang in there UK members. Please accept my support and sympathy for the terrible tragedy.

Immediately after 9/11 your country did so much to support the USA. I will never forget that.

6,000 doodlebugs reached England, 2,000 hit London.

In spite of the machine's defects, Wachtel's Flakregiment 155 (W) kept launching the bombs at a steady rate. On Saturday, June 18, 1944, his unit launched its 500th flying bomb. One of them landed on Hungerford Bridge, the railway bridge across the Thames River to Charing Cross Station in London. The explosion blew a gaping hole in the middle of the bridge, forcing one of London's major rail terminals to shut down. Later in the day, an American intelligence officer saw the damage done to the bridge-it had been blown almost in half by the explosion. He also noticed that several large buildings on the Thames embankment had all the windows facing the river blown out.

Each flying bomb had an efficient system of sensitive fuses and pressure switches that detonated the warhead on first contact, before the machine could bury its nose (and warhead) in the earth. When the 1,900 pounds of high explosives went off on the surface of a roadway, the blast cut down everything within reach. Solid walls crumbled-often, even individual bricks in a wall would be reduced to pebble-sized bits. Windows a quarter of a mile away cracked from the force of the explosion.

A central London fire station got a firsthand look at the effects from the blast of a flying bomb. The firemen had opened the station's big front doors, trying to enjoy a sunny but not very warm June day, when a buzz bomb landed less than a block away. The blast waves first slammed the heavy wooden doors shut; then, a second later, the vacuum created by the explosion wrenched them open again. When the bomb's warhead detonated, shock waves flew out in concentric circles, like gigantic ripples. As the blast waves pulsed outward, they created a vacuum behind them. One London fireman called it a "double whammy" effect-the vacuum was capable of creating as much damage as the blast itself.
