Soak overnight in gasoline and wait for an opaqueness, put into container with Professional Feibing dye...not the other stuff...and remove when slightly darker that you are shooting for. It works....and this might be from one of those mentioned in your post...cannot remember which if so.
I do it often. I use Fiebing's leather dye, and occasionally potassium permanganate.
Many nicely jigged bone scales are now available from Masecraft supply. If you are using the bone on new knives, that probably is the way to go.
In my restoration work, I have to match old bone often.
