Bonecutters comparison and Kamis making them

I suspect this Bonecutter exposure will make Purna Shankher busy for a while ;-)

Get (shanga) no reference found (Get is a too common word in English)

Here's the link to the reference of the Bonecutter made by kami Get:

That link appears in a post I made earlier in this thread (the link is the little blue box at the right of the "Originally Posted by..." line).

(It can also be found by searching for the specific phrase "Bonecutter by Get")

Sorry for missing stuff... I can't concentrate today. Major Pain got all my attention - although I'm trying really hard to focus on something else.
dumb question - how do search phrase? Everything I tried broke it into separate words. Ok nevermind the forum search... Google worked.

For the record, a phrase can be searched by putting quote marks on each end of the phrase.

Here's to Major Pain getting a demotion soon!

Thanks!

Lame excuse but I did put the quotes in the Forum Input Field, they get erased when you open advanced... Putting them back there does the trick as you said.

I wish all the officers would return to their billets and leave this cranky NCO alone....but the older i get, the more Majors seem to hang around waiting to jump on me for the slightest infraction, and where sleeping like a rock is a near forgotten dream of youth....i have discovered something new.....getting older is not all it's cracked up to be....

This is a fascinating bit of work you guys are doing.....my problem using search features here was noting the default settings had to be deselected even if others selected, and also paying attention to date range desired.....

Man that Rajkumar piece is amazing... I only have one piece by him, a Bashpati. I will buy any Rajkumar pieces anyone wants to sell;)

I'm blessed with several Rajkumar (The Prince) pieces.
I now officially declare you my 401K program. I've not dwelt much on retirement, figure I'll have to work till 106.
Thanks for saving me.

And i am simply taking notes while putting on my shark fins....

As for Bonecutter makers and listing, you might be able to apply for a government grant on cultural heritage preservation, and when grant money runs out after two years of paid vacation, announce, "after two year and $275,000 of research, cruising every internet post, we have determined that at some time in the past, every kami in Nepal has made at least one.".....

we have determined that at some time in the past, every kami in Nepal has made at least one.".....

That's funny. From popular perception of exclusive making to anyone can do it.
There was quite a price fluctuation on retail price depending on who were making them.

Between dispersed informative posts in the forum and the Himalayan Imports website, I think there is room for an Himalayan Imports wiki.

Unfortunately, building and maintaining this information takes times. I don't know how much times the HI enthusiasts would be welling to spend to create and maintain it up to date.

I would really like to have a central and up to date place for Kami marks. Right now it's here and there. Some are showing actual pictures others are using words (mountain, fish, sun, crescent, moon, flag, etc...)
In my dreams I see standard nomenclature with associated pictures (including variations).

I love the current times with Yangdu, Karda, Pala and all the nice folks working in Nepal to keep this small operation live and kicking. I just hope there is some succession planing for a long and healthy future.

The family continues and so will their business, as also many are now here and also many contacts back home......i am far more concerned about lack of archiving and storing info over the years, so much info posted, and most lost, photos go away, sites crash, and zero back-up, and everything spread far and wide and only links to stuff half of which lead to no photos survive..and to posts by people whom most here now have never heard of or heard from in a very long time.....and it has just been let go for years until near impossible to catalog and save....a wiki might not work as there are still competitors and antis who would jump in and have fun posting inaccurate or worse info.....this place needs an historian.....sales are made by both rep and by connection and personal investment.....i have no idea what percentage of which buys the most....

Ok then... Lets team up with welling contributors to improve the existing documentation on the website.
For starters and in smaller scale, we can probably add few stickies in the forum.

I am thinking links and stickies are overwhelming already and only located in a forum not really set up for an history....the original old site was much closer and new info posted in basically chronological order as it happened and was a flowing history narrative......then everything moved to forums and nothing kept organized....

I got here when it first started and Bill had just left us and even note Yangdu and i have same sign-on date....but it was so chaotic here i just plain bailed....and just recently back and not qualified from several fronts, both in even knowing any of the history since, nor in ability or even equipment....i am only a guy on a cell phone and that is it.....the only stickies i know are when i tread on bubblegum on a hot day....it needs some long term guys who know the site and history and have the keys....folk such as Karda and the very few others around since the beginning....or at least pointers from them.....but it needs more than a disjointed list of stickies leading to more disjointed posts and links out to infinity....

A start would be all 27,000 threads sorted and classified.....then could work in the 500,000 posts in those threads and cross reference off topic replies to appropriate thread classifications while ignoring the 90% which are nothing but gabbing.....but would need classifications such as company history, likewise same for knives, kamis, even posters come and gone.....other knives mentioned by other makers lumped into class by self and looked through by one of the collectors of such as much good info there not found elsewhere on obscure and historic other knives and swords, but not really germane to HI history.....

But a start would be all threads in chronological order, whether Cantina or main "sales floor" here as they call it, as much posting really belongs in both, but a list of ALL of it in order....and classifications decided, threads sorted into those, and then threads examined for other nuggets in those half-million posts......it would take one guy at minimum for each of those classifications also able to mine those posts for info applicable to preestablished classifications, and everything still kept in chronological order.....but we run into access problems for any of this...very few have that access and very few have what it takes at home to do this job....if enough qualified people will volunteer to do it.....and all of that is really only a start......it is a full time job for one or two to basically write an authorized history and only possible by fullest access....a daunting task....
sounds like fun to me!!!

Right! That was the purpose of the PM I sent earlier - I just added a link to yours.

indeedy :D

love me my Sgt Khadkas... most excellent.

haven't seen this new stuff from HI, and I don't know the current kamis or their work at all.

some of those pix look like classic GRS (ganga ram specials), and some look ... odd. a few even look just like Bonecutters :D cool.

I dont know but there may be good reason for that. Keep in mind that the website that hasnt been updated is a time capsule that marks Uncle Bills passing and everything he did to make this company great. Really great! It is pleasing to read through it knowing it is just as it was when he was on the same side of the river as we today. It keeps his spirit alive and makes me feel alive like I knew him and was talking to him yesterday tho I have never met him. My personal opinion is he was a great man and wish there were more like him today making our economy prosper with honor and integrity. Im glad Mrs Martino does what she does and continues to do selflessly. I sincerely hope it stays just as it is even though no new models are listed or listed models aren't available anymore. Its a snapshot of the time. You dont get that?

Your problem. When your loved one passes life sometimes becomes chaotic. No one gives a crap when you signed on to Bladeforums!

and just recently back and not qualified from several fronts,
Who wouldda guessed?

both in even knowing any of the history since, nor in ability or even equipment....i am only a guy on a cell phone and that is it.....the only stickies i know are when i tread on bubblegum on a hot day....it needs some long term guys who know the site and history and have the keys....folk such as Karda and the very few others around since the beginning....or at least pointers from them.....but it needs more than a disjointed list of stickies leading to more disjointed posts and links out to infinity....
And who's gonna pay for that? You? Those disjointed stickies are meticulously monitored by us formites and when the need arises to a respecting new forumite someone with the greatest respect will point you towards them (Thank you Mr. Tall! You are the best!)

This "nothing but gabbing" is what built this subforum as the most popular on bladeforums. Take a step back on the internet and see where knife enthusiast go to satisfy their information and comraderie needs Its Bladeforums by a long shot.. Take another look whitin blade forums and see which subforum has the most activity and you will see it is HI by a longshot. Thats is because we can accept building friendships with chit chat and get to know each other on common grounds and still focus on HI products. If you want Randall go to Randall. If you want Spiderco go there but you seem to forget your at HIMALAYAN IMPORTS!

The people here do what they can with what they got. They support the company and employees in time of need or even disaster and believe in them as family. They are not Spiderco or Randall or anything other than Himalayan Imports and dont try to make them what they are not. Hope it stays that way.

Bladite <-> ndgog -> I'm so freakin sorry. Last thing on hearth I wanted is to start a fire.

Bladite -> Please try to present ideas in positive solution mode.
ndog -> I get your points, I really do.

Images is one "historical" valuable type of assets that is often lost here. The number one reason why they are lost is pretty darn simple. This bladeforum platform is not ran by eccentric billionaires with unlimited funds. So they manage it the best they can with the resources they have (namely our paid subscriptions). The extremely limited size of the images we can upload here force us to use external storage. Because most people use free stuff. We get what we are paying for - volatile images that only last until we move to the other next best free stuff thing. I'm not happy with my image warehouse. But it breaks my hearth to know it would kill the pictures I posted here and there.

Back to the matter at hand - lets focus on our strengths. Please!

I've seen exchanges in threads involving PMs and emails regarding a Kami table/chart of marks.

Can it be made official/public?

I am not talking about reorganizing the precious website but talking about compiling an organized history from the info on the site for people who care more about the company and its history than the website. I seem to be a minority. This is the second time i have been jumped on with both feet by supposedly loyalist posters for suggesting such, and the LAST time. With friends like you, who needs enemies. Go right ahead, and as before, and when anyone wishes to know something, let them pore through disorganized stickies, run hours of searches and still miss stuff, and generally waste their time. Time better spent nattering on about whatever rather than any organized effort to save the story of this company in which they could help assemble. You obviously have far better things to do. 25 yrs from now, this site, if it does not crash, will be your personal monument.
