So I have this piece of oak sapwood that is pretty crazy, cut it myself and stabilized it myself last year. So, I finally decide to use it. I need to knock the size down a little for scales as it is a 1.5" block. So, I fire up the table saw and set er up and cut away WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE GRAIN DIRECTION!!! It's not so much the loss of money cause it was free, but all the work and luck I guess you could say to find something so interesting in the tree in yer back yard. What a TOOL!!!

Oh, not to mention that my knifemaker account ran out so now I cannot search for anything, not even my own posts or previous threads.:grumpy::barf:

Ugh.

Here's what the scales were supposed to look like.

Actually, they're still kind a cool. I like them. They look a little like a W's explosion pattern damascus, with a twist or two.

I agree with Scott. The way you wanted it was certainly striking but the way you got them looks cool too.

Why dont you sand them down and polish them, and see what they look like? post another pic after you do that. I think they will look great...

Good thing I walked away from the shop for lunch and such. I was about to start shaping a pair of chechen burl scales to take its place. So I polished em up a hair...

Well given a choice your rejected scales would suite me better. I think that they have got a lot of character that will show through when you are rounding the handle.
