Getting distracted can sure cause you to make some pretty good mistakes some times. I made my first 6 blades of 2007 all the way through and ready to start putting handles on and realized that I for got to stamp serial numbers on the blades (154CM) before heat treat. Does not hurt the blade....but it sure made my stomach sink when I realized it. Oh well....they will be special...right? Some day when I am dead and gone and someone looks in my record book and sees this anomoly, those 6 knives made in 2007 with engraved verses the normal stamped serial numbers will be worth much more:) Well I guess I feel better sharing my mistakes and maybe it will make you feel better about yours:) Guess I will market these as UNIQUE.

hey man at least you didnt try to clean up the flats with a maganet attached blade on the PLATEN.( i felt like such a dumb a$$)

What do you mean doc, I do it all the time? Did you have an instance where the blade slipped down between the rest and the belt did you? :)

Me too doc. The trick is, if you are grinding point down, don't hold the point steady with your other hand. :D

Rob!

i think the maganet i used may have been to strong. i ripped it out of a huge speaker. it will pick wrenches off my bench from 1 1/2 inches away. and pulling anything off it takes 2 hands. when i got it close to the platen it jumped from my hands and actualy pinched the belt to the platen and stopped it from moving.

That must be a rare earth magnet. I use a 100 lb. pull magnet mounted on a board so I can control it. Part number 55025A38, page 1141 of McMaster Carr catalog.

mounting it sounds like a good idea im gonna have to try that. till then ill just use the 10 in wheel.
