Got a cpm154 blade I'm working on for the nephew and messed up drilling the last pin hole for the guard. Any way to fill it in with weld and redrill or is that going to cause heat treat problems when I send it out?
You could probably weld it, but I wouldn't recommend it. I might suggest drilling out the bad area, pressing in a slug, grinding flush and trying again.
Just oversize and peen a like size piece of brass in. Flush file / grind and drill again. HT after oversizing the hole but prior to pressing the slug in.
If the guard is large enough to cover the hole, counter sink the hole to stress relieve the edges, and after heat treating, fill with the hole with silver solder and smoothe. The silver solder will hold the pin in the center and you'll never know the difference.
Heck you want to get fancy you could drill out the hole and tap it to like 1/4 fine (smaller or larger would work) and then after the heat treat thread in a piece of a soft bolt smooth both sides and be real solid. All the above are fine though. With a air hardening steel the threads will be fine. I have even threaded O1 and used the threads after HT.
