I'd like to recommend "Camping & Wilderness Survival" by Paul Tawrell. I found this book at my local camping store over the weekend, and was blown away. If you're looking for a book about EVERYTHING, this is it.

I'm a big fan of the "SAS Survival Guide"- I've been studying it for a while, and have found it very useful. I've dog-eared my large copy, and carry the small version in my EDC bag. "Camping & Wilderness Survival" blows the "SAS Survival Guide" away, IMHO. It has probably twice the amount of information, in much greater detail, and has more, and better illustrations, all in color. It's astonishing how much is in this book. Basically, it's similar to the SAS guide, in that it gives survival information about every environment on earth. But it goes into much greater, specific detail about how to do things.

The section on River navigation, for example, is amazing. Not only does the book tell you how to make different river-worthy vessels, from various materials, in great detail, it goes into the specifics of paddle strokes, how to recognize and deal with hazards, and escape emergencies. Then it goes into a fascinating, 5 page long discussion of river hydraulics, with lavish diagrams, that illustrates the specifics of water behavior, and explains how to recognize and navigate various features. Awesome! The book goes into countless topics with similar detail. You want to make a shelter? The book describes how to make shelter in any environment, from temporary to permanent- from debris huts all the way up to log cabins. Dozens of different Native shelters are diagrammed and explained- showing you how to build ideal shelters from local materials- in every environment from the jungle, to the forest, to the plains, to the steppes, to the arctic.

If you're interested in anything outdoorsy- I highly recommend this book. If you were an alien, coming down from space, and wanted to know everything about the mechanics of Planet Earth, this would be the book for you.
