Book Review: The Filipino Martial Arts

Thanks Steve for posting..Steve has a great idea..you download the book..send Guro Dan a check....plus thank him for the knowledge...
I'm really impressed..we actually got THE STEVE GRODY to post on the forums..
Let me officially welcome you Steve to the Blade Forums..I hope you feel free to post and even start a few threads yourself!!!

Steve's post invites a lovely sidestep to this issue. Very simple and very worthwhile. Past downloaders should take it to heart and send Guro I some money. *Nice* answer. Prospective new downloaders will have to wait until Guro I OKs the resource to do the same.

Bram, your comment "As for the comment you sleep well knowing no one is hurt by your site allowing downloading" is coming from your mind, not my words. Reread my last post. That's not what I said. I said that I sleep smiling regardless of what people call me. Also, when did I say that Guro I has condoned what I do? You appear to be riling yourself up by piecing my words together in ways I didn't intend. I could get miffed at the attacks on my personality and then throw some back, but what's the point. Actualy, more than your attacks ever could, it hurts me knowing that this resource has caused you such upset. It's purpose was to make people happy. I did what I thought was a good thing. Now I wait for Guro I.

The availability of this resource is a good thing. Not trying harder to contact Guro I six months ago about it was not. I want to hear from Guro I. The november seminar I mentioned above is out of my grasp now as I won't be able to spare the fee due to a recent job change and so won't be able to ask him in person. I'll try e-mail and phone to the academy but am not too confident of contacting Guro I himself. I hope your resources, and anyone else's on this list can get us some words from Guro I.

I for one am very interested in what Ron Balicki might have said, especially if he has words from Guro I. Are you able to post that?

oh, wow!
First off- BRAM, i agree with you and Mr. Grody 1000% (i threw in the extra 0 cause those things are cheap enough to throw around!).
Now, i'm getting all excited sitting here (NO, not like that...

....
is this THE Steve Grody? With the videotapes and all that?
Jeez, the first tape i ever bought on unarmed self-defense was your tape- Vol. I (not the trapping or kali, it was basic stuff). Excellent- it really got into proper mechanics and superior defense. i remember using that "elbow up, protecting the temple" kind of stance- i used it against a black belt just playing around. gotta tell ya, every time he'd try to swat me- i'd bring that baby down, check (trap) his attacking hand and always get an excellent counter on him (even went to a front choke from that position).
So, Mr. Grody- where in heck did you get that stance from? i've always wondered, cause it's unusual (maybe not to kali or arnis players, but it was to me) although i can kinda see it in the arnis concepts like the tape i got from Bram.
btw- Welcome, and it's an honor to have you here! do stick around, cause i really, really liked the techniques you showed on those tapes- simple, quick, and deceptive!

Independently I came up with the same idea as Steve Grody.

So: could someone post a good address for Guro Dan I.? Conversely, can someone get his (Guro Dan's) opinion on the subject posted in the Forum?

I guess Ashley we missed again..I read from your post that you thought that you were doing a good thing..( did Imisread that as well?) HOW? by what ethical code? by what interpretation of good?
Noo i wasn't riling up..You stated you sleep well..I sure wouldn't..But I guess you're not an author of intellectual material..or it would bother you GREATLY..
I have nothing against you personally..I don't know you..never met you...
I am offended by the cavlier attitude and the purpose of the site.
Guess thats just me..must be my age..

Yes,,Thats the Steve Grody of the UNIQUE tape series..A very talented instructor and exceptional at getting his ideas and concepts across to those that want to learn...
Steve see you in a few days!!!
Ashley..this isn't personal..really..
I'll get a hold of Tim Tackett as well...
OK???

You did not misread me. I did and do think that the *availability* of this resource is a good thing. This book is in some ways (for me as an east-coaster at least) as big a part of FMA in America as the Filipino immigrants who brought their arts with them to California. And, it's still a good introduction to what FMA is about conceptually (even if there were unauthorized changes to Guro I's intention). Thus, it was originally scanned and put on a site by someone who wanted to share what he had found to be meaningful to him. I compiled that work into a program and put it on a site because I wanted to share something that I'd found to be meaningful to me. We both did this with the intention of helping others find something as special for themselves as we'd found for ourselves. Trying to help others is my interpretation of good. As I said in my previous post, what was *not* good was "Not trying harder to contact Guro I six months ago about it ."

'Cavalier' to me infers that a choice was weighed and made; will it hurt him or won't it? I wouldn't have made my program resource available if I thought Guro I would be hurt. I just never thought about it like that. My bad. I did something with good intentions, in hindsight wasn't as thorough as I should have been in tracking down permission, and am now trying to fix the problem. The resouce has had it's links broken for some while now as we wait for word from Guro I. I hope that when it eventually comes it is positive.

I'm an author of some intellectual property. Some software training texts and several Windows software programs (http://www.fyi.net/~abass/domino/free.htm). When someone defrauds me on a purchase of shareware, I'm pissed because I'm actively persuing compensation. Regarding this resource, I figured (singlemindedly and naively perhaps) that since Guro I didn't want to make money on it anymore, then its freeness was not an issue. This because if I decided to not sell a program anymore for whatever reason, I wouldn't care if other people still used it or shared it or whatevered it so long as they weren't trying to sell it. Now, Guro I is not me. That's why we're where we are right now.

Not taking anything personal Bram, thanks. To your credit this thread got me thinking about this as I hadn't before. Now to sleep :-)

Ashley...no problem..
I've made the same type of mistake..thats how I learned..LOl..thought I was helping out..but I hadn't looked past the trees to see FOREST..Oh well
I know you meant no harm..and yes it's info that personally I think should be preserved and reprinted..but I'm not Guro Dan,et al so my personal feelings on the historical attributes on the book are a moot point..
Thanks for being so open minded on this thread!!!
I'm not sure how well others would have responded in your place..please feel free to lurk, post and feel at home on these forums..
Steve gets here friday..I'm sure well be talking of this amongst other things..LOL
have a good weekend!
