Book, The Complete Walker?

I always thought it was funny how Colin recommended 151 rum or other extremely potent booze so that the drunk-to-weight ratio was low while in the bush.

Try your library too. "Backpacking One Step at a Time" by Manning was another book written about the same time.

Gear has changed, but the basics haven't. You will find good stuff, but they are old (so am I).

I see that Ray Jardine has a new edition of "Beyond Backpacking" out, entitled "Trail Life." Jardine is the Godfather of ultralight backpacking. He can be a crackpot at times, especially when he takes off on diet and nutrition, but his ideas about ultralight hiking have created a new outdoor industry. He's a helluva engineer-- the guy who developed the cam devices that rock climbers use.

Another very current book on gear and methods is "Lightweight Backpacking & Camping: A Field Guide to Wilderness Hiking Equipment, Technique, and Style" by Ryan Jordan. Jordan is the publisher of Backpackinglight.com and it's accompanying magazine. He has his head on straight.
