Dr. Andrey Lebed, Moscow, Russia is at Toad Hall for a few days to study engraving and blacksmithing. Turns out my website is popular in Russia. While doing some simple C and S scrolls on a killed aluminum block, I spoke about this weird dude I know up in the great Northwest that just happened to speak with an Oz accent and I'd appreciate it if Andrey would say hello to my friend. Bawanna meet Andrey.

It reads: "Hello Bawanna" in Russian. It is pronounced PREEVIT Bawanna.

NYET BABAHHA!.....
I think I've got this figgered out.....
Bawanna is your parasitic twin.....I think I see his moustachio pokin' out of the top of your shirt collar again. :D

Hello Andrey and Welcome!

we let russians in the usa?!?! ;D

welcome andrey and very cool you are studying with an old master like bookie, the mojo probably just rolls off of him into the local forest spirits

I'm truly touched. No idea how to say it but right back at cha Dr Andrey.

Do take more pictures, been dreadfully quiet around here of late. Now I know why we haven't had many reports from corn patch of late.

I'll have to take a picture of my newest revolver. The Dr. may recognize it.

Hope he enjoys his visit.

Welcome Dr Lebed, I am certain that Bookie is treating you right. (AREN'T you Bookie ;) ) Is it a Medical or Research Doctorate? Bookie is certainly a good choice to learn that sort of thing from. He might be a touch, hmm how to phrase it, "perforated around the edges", but he is genuinely a good guy and incredibly skilled at turning metal into functional works of art.

hmm a revolver that a Russian Dr. might recognize...A Nagant? Yes please pictures.

It's really kind of nice, very unusual, crude in many ways and innovative in others.
The cartridge 7.62x38 is unique in that the bullet is completely inside the case and held in place by a little dimple.
It's relatively accurate, triggers not quite match grade by any stretch but I love it.

Check out the firing pin on this bad boy.

I gotta find me a Russian dictionary, I got a hunch the good doctor and Bookie are bamboozling me. Babahha? I'm not falling down that well.

Hello Andrey and Welcome!

Parasitic Twin? So like I'm like Bookies little Minnie Me trying to crawl out his shirt collar?
Wow! I think that's about the nicest thing anyone ever said about me.

Scara, yes, I cover some "blacksmithing" elsewhere.
Karda, That is the best laugh I've had all week! Thanks, brother.
03, the good doctor was an army doctor in Afghanistan when Rambo was still hanging out with Mujahideen in the movies and feels sorry for our troops. He has went up the food chain and now teaches medicine---almost exclusively to American students. Is into muzzle loaders in a big way!
Bawanna, Only the 3rd letter in Bawanna written in Russian is a B. The first letter is an Idunnowhat. Photos coming. Many hours in the black smith shop today and did we burn some coal! Crap. Snowing like crazy outside right now.

[/IMG] Smokin! Andrey finds out why it's called a "green fire". He has never experienced black smithing before. Arrrrrh, matey. Hyar thar be dragons!
b-2.jpg
[/IMG] The gases have burned off, the coal is coking nicely, the fire is a bit high, but it's only 10 degrees INSIDE this morning.

[/IMG] Andrey is drawing out the grip rail for an Appalachian iron trigger guard.
d.jpg
[/IMG] Bookie watching over the straightening operation to make sure he doesn't over correct and break the thin rail.
aa.jpg
[/IMG] Ahh. Success! It turned out very well, so El Bookomundo the Great cranks up an illicit stogie in all the smoke so his probation off...er..wife don't find out.
e.jpg
[/IMG] Dr. Fox draws out the trigger bow to make it wider and thinner.
f.jpg
[/IMG] Here he is using a "cut-off Hardy" to remove the trigger guard bow from the bar stock so a hack saw need not be used.
g.jpg
[/IMG] Four hours later, Andrey is justifiably proud of his endeavors. Took a tad longer than normal since he was starting his pounding iron educatiion, but neither piece is buggered up and both are quite sound. Great job. Tonight we'll join the two pieces together to make a complete rifle trigger guard.

Looks like he's having a very good time.

You hammer weld those pieces together or some other means?

Keep the pics coming, I love this stuff.

Love the cut off hardy. That's brilliant, not having to use the old hacksaw.

yeah awesome to see this kind of stuff being shared--- is there a big "historic appreciation" crowd in russia? do they have a mess of war actors for the period? or is there just lots of fondness for primitive firearms

Welcome Dr. Lebed! Hope your stay is enjoyable. I'm sure it will be getting to hang out with Bookie. Ive been hammering out springs this weekend and got a chance to try out Bookies sardine can tempering method (from his website) and boy does it work well. The weather is pretty crappy here in Texas but nothing like your used to in Russia I suppose. Good time to be by the fire. ...What? no Russian vodka?

First up is a pic of Durty Nelly and me. (I is more proper than me, but I don't want Bawanna to get ahead of me!) Andrey has been learning to forge a trigger guard like hers. You can decide for yourself if he did good or no.
h.jpg
[/IMG] I'm 5' 10" tall. That will give you some idea how long my concealed weapons permit shoulder holster is.
i.jpg
[/IMG] Dr. Fox shows off the sweat from his brow. Looks rather happy & proud, don't you think?
j.jpg
[/IMG] Here's a close up. Rather spartan or utilitarian, but totally functional. Excellent job for the first time effort. Besides forging and bending steel, Andrey gave engraving the old college try. We would start work a 7 AM and knock off around 9:30 - 10 PM. Long days for this old codger.

[/IMG] This one's for you, Bawanna. Now we'll finish up similar to how we started out. He is now on the road back to the Des Moines Airport and is telling you good bye, farewell, til we meet again. It's pronounced phonetically: Doh svi danny ia, Bawanna!

Wicked cool. I think he done a real fine, I hope he joins us here and we can be pen pals or something.

He definitely learned some stuff. Can we ship Khuks to Russia? I'd kick in to get him a nice one as a gift. We'll call it international diplomacy!

Gawd, I love Durty Nelly and I'm not ashamed to admit it. That's a beauty with a capital B.

No. Russian customs has repeatedly returned khukuri shipments to Auntie on the grounds that they are illegal items and forbidden to enter the country.
Auntie no longer will ship there. Aside from that, their postal system leaves much to be desired most days. As often as not I've seen members of this site ship items there only for them to be lost in a black hole and then the sender gets a claim filed against him for reimbursement, so the sender end up without the item sold and out the money paid for the item.

Awesome pics guys. That is one hell of a rifle bookie. If you run low on ammo you can use it as a club...or pole vault to safety lol

Wicked pistols Joe, or should I call you babahha? I've never seen a revolver shoot rounds like that before. You guys get cooler by the day haha
