While I'm "out in the woods- and on the rivers" quite often, I would like to know about wilderness-survival a lot more...plants, building shelters, knots, tools, bushcraft whatever.
Could you recommend me a few good books on the topic?

thank you, Peter

A few of my favorites out of my small library. There are others I haven't got yet.

Building Shelters:
Shelters, Shacks, and Shanties - Beard
Wilderness Shelters - Angier (Out of print and hard to find)
Rustic Retreats - Stiles (mostly modern, but has a few expedient shelters)

Knots:
Ashley's - Forget the author, but I assume Ashley
Knots - Forget the Author

General:
Bushcraft - Kochanski
Bushcraft - Graves (Out of print, you can find a copy, but expect to pay a premium)
Wildwood Wisdom - Jaeger
Naked Into The Wilderness - McPherson (Don't own it yet, but mrostov has been praising it)

Someone else will have to suggest a good plant book. Also, since you're going to be out on the river, check out "Boats and Boat Building" by Beard.

Trying not to duplicate (Some of the following are more survival, some more bushcraft.):

Survival With Style, Braford Angier, Vintage Books

US Army Survival Manual, FM 21-76

98.6 Degrees, The art of keeping your ass alive, Cody Lunden, Gibbs Smith

The Survival Handbook, Peter Darman, Greenhill Books

The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook, Piven and Birgenicht, Chronicle Books

Tom Brown's Field Guide to Wilderness Survival, Tom Brown, Berkley Books

Survive Anywhere Safely, The SAS Survival Manual, John Wiseman, Collins

The Encyclopedia of Survival Techniques, Alexander Stilwell, Lyons Press

The Outdoor Survival Handbook, Raymond Mears, St. Martins Press
