I would like this thread to develop a list of books about traditional knife patterns of any kind: Japanese, Persian, European, African, Asian, anything. I would like to know also how to obtain these books. My contribution is an excellent book called "American Primitive Knives 1770-1870" by Gordon B. Minnis. Published by Museum Restoration Service-1983. ISBN 0-919316-85-9.

Unfortunatly, I've forgotten where I bought this book, I know it was through the mail.
Maybe someone can tell us where it is available. It has many B&W photos of Bowies, daggers, patch knives, hunters, etc. If this topic has been covered before, please point me in the right direction.

If you're interested, I have a book posted on the Trading Post for sale called American Knives. It was the first book written about knives(1958)by Harold Peterson.
There was also another book by the same author called A History of Knives.

Two that come to mind right away are actually 'how to' books but qualify for your topic. Wayne Goddard's 'The Wonder of Knifemaking' and David Boye's 'Step-by-Step Knifemaking' are both excellent. As to sources; amazon.com, bibliofind.com and half.com come to mind.

Here's one that covers most ancient and worldly patterns, its one of my "bibles"

"The Book of the Sword" with 293 illustrations written by the late Sir Richard F. Burton.
Dover

it was originally published in 1884, dont let the title mislead you, it does cover alot of swords but a lot of other bladed implements too. Hope this helps

Thanks. I will try to obtain the sword book. Not much interest in books around here, must be the wrong forum for atheists and readers.

The largest and most complete book was done by George Stone, something like "An Encyclopedia of Arms and Armor from many nations and through many ages" It has been reprented a couple of times an original would cost thousands the reprints can cost from $35-75
get this book, it will keep you busy for weeks. How can no one have mentioned Bernard Levine's Guide to Knives and their values. Available everywhere. Get the 4th edition.

go to Amazon or Barnes&Noble and search for knives, daggers, swords, etc. I did that with Amazon until I got a book for which they paid $15 and charged me $85, left the invoice from the book dealer in the book.
