It's not specifically knife related, but having a foundation in general blacksmithing will put you years ahead of the game. Get Randy McDaniel's Blacksmithing Primer. It's available as a book (the new edition is much better than the old. I have both...) and now also as a 6 hour set of DVDs. The DVDs are EXCELLENT. They're very well produced and Randy has set it up so that each item from the book has it's own DVD chapter so you can skip right to the thing you want to see. I've had the pleasre of taking a class from Randy and he is a great teacher who really knows how to make sense of things for his students. This shows in his Book and DVDs as well.

check out "The new edge oft he Anvil" by Jack Andrews, "Modern Blacksmithing" by Alexander Weygar, or Hrisoulas's books.

Bill Morans three videos are pretty good. you may also want to check out www.umbaonline.com We have a video library. The videos were made at demonstrations, and cover a wide variety of subjects. these are not rentals either, $5 a piece and they burn you a copy on DVD $2 shipping for one or ten

The Hand Forged Knife by Carl Schroen (SP), Both Jim Hrisoulas books are great. And then Wayne Goddard's books give a good outline. The best thing to do is forge. The more practice you get the more your technique improves and you get comfortable with it.

Also, try to get to a hammer in, those two or three days may be worth months of trial and error

I second anything by Jim Hrisoulas and Wayne Goddard--I recently got Jim's first book, and Wayne's "$50.00 Knife Shop-revisited". The $50.00 knife shop book has MANY great little jigs, fixtures, and tools that you can build yourself for very little cost. Just gathering info. and planning at this point, hope to actually start beating some hot iron soon. 47

Check out "Knifemaking Unplugged" by Tim Lively, it's a DVD. Excellent explanation of steel chemistry and technique.
