Is anyone aware of any books that are mainly or only on edible plants? That wiould be my weakest point in a survival situation.

"The Forager's Harvest", Samuel Thayer - a limited selection of plants, but very deep in identification, harvest and preparation. Eastern in orientation.

"Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants in Wild (and Not So Wild) Places" Steve Brill with Evelyn Dean - more plants, definite eastern orientation.

Others I have are Western or Californian in orientation.

Whatever texts you read on 'survival' should be oriented to your specific region that you frequent, including plant texts. I have no use for any SW USA info as I never intend to be out there; so I focus on more woodland oriented topics. Just the way i see things; Steve Brill's book is educational, going into the field with him for a few days is priceless! If in the NYC area look him up to go on a filed trip highly recommended!

i say head over to the local library and bookstore and look up books on plants. look through them and find some that are geared towards your area.

some things to look for in ID books are good descriptions and full color photos.

i got a set of nice laminated pamphlets that have good diagrams and give a breif description of alot of the plants in my area, and tell what parts of the plants are good for eating.

Most of the ones I have are geared to the east. Looks like you are out west.

But not plants but The National Audobon Society Field Guide to Mushrooms is one of the best mushroom guides I've found:thumbup:

The pics are excellent

Recently on the recommendation of some people here i picked up
"Edible Wild Plants-A North American Field Guide" By Thomas S. Elias & Peter A. Dykeham.
17.95 U.S, 19.95 Canadian at Amazon.
I've been busy lately so I've just barely started to read it. Looks good so far!
