Any suggestions for small bookshelf stereo speakers for the playing of CDs and radio? I live in an appartment and will not be requiring loud volume. I would like them to be max $200.
Thanks

In that price range, I'd go with a kit speaker. You don't need much skill to produce a good speaker with a computer modeled crossover and some quality drivers wiht a prebuilt and finished enclosure.

http://www.madisound.com/sled.html is the one in your price range.

Their whole kit list. http://www.madisound.com/kits.html

Many of these are pretty pricey, but if you can make your own enclosure cabinet, you can generate some savings.

Bose...Check out any nearby pawn shops if you have any where you're at. A couple years ago, I bought a like-new pair of Bose 311's for $90, and they sound EXCELLENT..

i've got a set of bose 311's i've had for years and they've done great. I don't know if they're still around but Avent made some really good bookshelf speakers for not much money. later, ahgar

There's a saying in the audio industry: No highs? No lows? Must be Bose'.

Despite their seemingly European name, Bose' stuff is made in China. It's poor quality. I used to work for a company that had a marketing partnership with Bose'. I know what their cost-of-goods-sold is and what their profit margin is. Let's just say you're paying a lot for the name.

If you can get a used set for a good price, that's good. But don't pay retail for their stuff.

im also in a audio club-audiocircle-
you can do alot better than bose-
take a look at av123-they have some nice bookshelfs-or go the diy route-
partsexpress, madisound and a few other places

I got a pair of Acoustic Research 215 PS bookshelf speakers on Ebay for around 100 bucks. They were discontinued by AR, but still show up. These would work very well for you if you don't mind going the auction route.

Depending on your amplifier, spending your full $200 on bookshelves may not be the best idea. If you have a decent quality amp, then I would suggest going with something by axiom, or by JBL. Klipsch also makes some quite good speakers, but they are a less than neutral speaker, some people love them, some don't.

I'd suggest keeping an eye on audiogon and looking for a good deal locally, where you can drop by and hear them before you purchase.

About a decade ago I bought a pair of bookshelf speakers from KEF on sale at a local audiofile store when they were updating their inventory to new models. They were the best speakers I heard, and I still have not found better ones. I just looked on the net hoping to find some sales on them, but all I found was pretty obscene. Perhaps if you see them somewhere on sale, give them a listen. I am not talking about any weird round, plastic-encased tiny stuff (they make those too), just your basic, honest, bookshelf speakers.

Bose is of Indian decent. His full name is Amar Gopal Bose. From Calcutta. ;)

Most decent PC speakers will work as bookcase speakers.

Nope PC, only by review. But at $200 I don't think you can go too far wrong.

Definitely. I'm using a set of Monsoon planars and subwoofer with my desktop. When I plug them into my portable CD player.... WOW!

I used to live up the road from Acoustic Research in Houghton Regis, England. They are a small company and good quality. A friend of mine had pair of AR3a speakers, I had an AR turntable. Another friend had a pair of ARs that were nearly 5 foot tall. He was an audio engineer.

Back in the day the AR3a was about as fine a speaker as you could buy. Still a classic.
