Boonie hats?

Thanks for the replies. I just bought a 50/50 nylon/cotton Propper boonie in 3-color desert. It's nice but I think should have bought the 100% cotton ripstop instead. I may end up with several before I'm done!

Just my $.02 but for those of you who have paracord wraped around your boonies. If you daisy chain it around the holes it can be extracted much quicker. I will post pics of mine if I can figure out how..

I don't care much for miltary spec boonie hats because they are hot, too form fitting, and have too short of a brim.
I did find a great summer hat at REI....the Paddler's hat,

It's very light-weight and has plenty of semi-stiff brim to keep the sun off to beat the heat.

View attachment 227084Okay, maybe not strictly a boonie hat but I don't have much turf upstairs and need the protection of a hat but I also find they make my head sweat like crazy. My latest hat came from Dicks Sporting Goods and has breathable mesh around the perimeter, a chin strap, and snaps that will secure the brim folded up if desired.

I have this one and it works well in heat. As has been suggested with the boonies, I wet it and use the evaporative cooling effect. I like the mesh vent, but hate that it is black. I've worn it while troweling concrete and while canoing this summer and it is a great improvement over a ball cap. It is crushable and lightweight.

Don't be silly, check out some Tilley's. Tilley hats. I have no pics of the one i have, it is NOT a Tilley, but i will own one of them soon. Mine is an oilskin hat. I left it in my truck & it is in for repairs.

I've looked at the Tilleys. They start at three times the price of my Dick hat. And the ones I have tried were heavier than my Dick. I have a Resistol 4X beaver for cold, wet weather. But yeah, I keep looking at the Tilleys.
