I'm looking for an inexpensive (less than $200) boot knife. I really like the chute knife style, but it isn't necessary. What would you guys recommend?

Whatever you do, don't make the mistake of not using a proper retention system. Tuck an old-timey straight razor in a leather sheath into the top of your boot, for example, and you'll lose it within a week.

Go for a custom if you want it done right—it's not that expensive, look on the custom forums here—and get an elastic strap at the very least to go through the sheath.

I had a Gerber Mark I that was awesome. If I was gonna replace it, I'd get the Gerber Guardian Backup instead.

I've had the A.G. Russell Sting, and its CRKT counterpart. I enjoyed both. CRKT version is only like 40 bucks. A.G. now has the Hollow Ground Sting 3 in Cocobolo or black rucarta. I'll most likely end up with one of these... I like 440C and the leather sheath with boot clip is a dang near necessity. Their Sting 3B is like half the price, but still holds to the shape and style.

Only other one I considered trying was the Benchmade SOCP Double Edge Dagger. I got no use for it, but I dig the look and the sheath.

Check out a Gryphon M-10.

I have seen pictures of a Gryphon M10 and kind of like it but, my favorite boot knife is the Kershaw Military boot knife. Not very costly. It won't keep you awake at night if you loose it.

I have a Western W77 with a 4" blade which is simple, yet very nice. Case has a great one as well.

Look into the falknivven dagger, I forget it's name, maybe "v" something. They were discontinued last year but weren't very expensive

Edit: it's the "G1", around 150 on the first sight I saw but I remember them being lower than that

depending on the size of your boots and what exactly you are looking for.... to be honest, for a boot knife I quite fancy the new Kabar EK knives with the handle scales removed and a bit of paracord added for grip.... it slims the whole thing up nicely and is still a very effective blade.....

Personally I'd probably go with the Bowie style blade as long as the length was not a legal issue in your AO
