I am looking for a good boot knife to carry and use. I have scanned around the web a little but get overwhelmed by too much information. I wanted to ask ya"ll what your recommendations are..

Thanks,

Sunburst

"Don't get yourself into situations where you think you'll need a boot knife"? :)

But seriously, no I'm afraid I don't have any good recommendations.

He,he,he..It's not that I'm going to start hitting the bars picking fights or something I just thought it would be a useful tool at times in what I do for a living..

Thanks..Sunburst

Sunburst, here is nice little blade for you, the Randall Triathlete. The stock Sullivan leather sheath comes with a boot clip. Good luck finding one :D

Boker Mini Smatchet. Just got one myself this weekend and am really pleased. The sheath is crappy ( mine came with a custom sheath ) but you can always go after market. The blade is not overlong and it is wide enough to do a good bit of damage.
Now if you have the money Mark Terrell makes IMHO the best boot knife in the industry.

Sunburst. Check out Joe Szilaski's stuff here

and look in the lower right hand corner of the page.
D-2 steel and designed by Joe. They are superior knives and priced right.

Thank you gents..:) It looks like you have put me in the right direction and it's most appreciated...

Fallkniven Garm fighting knife model G1 would seem a good choice, or maybe the Rat-3 from ontario. I don't carry a "boot" knife, nor have I, but I do occassionally edc a fixed bladed tool IWB, or in a pocket sheath.

Once again thanks for the heads up on the boot knives. I went ahead and ordered an Ontario Rat-3 in D2, after reading up on this knife it almost has a "Cult" following with folks and a well engineered sheath that fits most needs..Also the fact that I picked it up for only $75.00 made it an easy decision...

ONTARIO, RAT-3 D-2, Randall's Training and Adventure Knife. Stock #ON-RAT-3 D-2OD. 7 7/8" Overall. Blade is 3 3/8", D2 Steel with a Bead Blast Finish, 58-60 Rc hardness. Full Tang Construction with Gray Linen Micarta Handle Slabs for increased grip when wet, and extended Pommel with Lanyard Hole. Also features a Green/Olive Drab, Kydex Sheath with Blade tech clip

Well, if you are looking for a great high quality, affordable boot knife I found it...I liked it so much I ordered the Rams horn Rat-3

I'm waiting for my RAT3 Ramhorn at the moment. Can't wait;) What's the sheath like though? And blade maintenance too?

Bark River make excellent knives and they too offer a boot-knife, question is what kind of boot do you need to wear for a boot-knife originally? Some Wehrmacht stormtrooper's high boot:D

If you can find one, Gerber (Blackie Collins Designed) Clip Lock.

Great, affordable boot knife!

My Rat 3 Horn arrived yesterday:thumbup:

Well pleased with it,the dimensions are just right and the finish is alternative and attractive:D

But how to care for that polished finish?? How to clean off corrosion without messing up the horn scales(esp on the blade tang)
How about cleaning the scales? Thanks!

Willgoy.. it's D2 correct?

If so...
You really won't have to do anything except keep it dry.
It probably won't even patina. It's a semi-stainless steel with
enough chromium in it to keep most corrosion at bay.

I have a few D2 knives and I've never had an issue with
corrosion... still shiny like new! D2 is hard so it also
doesn't scratch easily.

As for the Rams Horn handle... I dunno... :-)

Texas toothpick kept in a soft leather sheath with a clip for inside the boot carry. Ron Ryder at Cutters and Collectors can make you a nice one.

Thanks for the info:D

The D2 blade certainly made me think of stainless so it's good to know I won't need to rub it down with wet&dry paper every time it's used:thumbup:

As for the Ram Horn scales, I can't get over how excellent they look and feel, get some today that's my advice!

My experience with Queen D2 is different. It did patina for me but not easily. My biggest problem was that it pitted. It was not a safe queen but an every day user, even in the kitchen. From what I've read, the corrosion resistance of D2 can be variable depending upon heat treat, finish and environment. I'd suggest you treat it as carbon steel, since it's not really stainless...plus even stainless does not mean rust or stain free.

Forgive me if we have already had this conversation about Mr. White..

I do not recall you and I having this chat, rather I think perhaps it was Amos and I instead.. So then cutom made boot knive at cheap prices.

For example this smooth red bone for $100. delivered to your door:

Allot more where this came from.

That's the kind of sheath I'm looking for to replace the kydex horror on my Bark river boot knife? Any chance of just getting a sheath made?? Thanks
