I have orederd some boots for the woods. Can you guys tell me if there a good choice? There Altama desert ripple sole boots, size is 9EE. I have orderd them from sportsmansguide. My Army boots that I still have from the service were Altama and I wore them the whole time I was in Desert Storm back in 90 and 91. I liked them but they could have been more comfortable. I hope these will be better than the old ones. The color is desert tan and I have paid 103.00 shipping and everything. Whats yalls thinking on this? Understand that I have hard to fit feet. My feet are wide with a narrow heel. The reason I orderd the Altamas is because they were wide enough in the Army and I have tried just about everything else that Sears and Walmart can sell. My wife doesnt know and she will kill me when she finds out. haha.

Wear them indoors to try them out, if you don't like the fit, send them back. After you send them back, go to a Redwing boot dealer and have your foot properly measured and try on some of their boots to see if you like them. If you don't like them, at least you will have a better idea as to what your foot size really is. Believe it or not but your foot size could be different since your time in the military. In 1970 I wore a size 9 R (regular), now I wear a size 10.5 D... your feet change as you age. Good luck and take good care of your dogs - don't make them bark!

I have the OD ripple sole Jungle boots from them, same boot but without the "rough out" finish.
I love them, comfortable and light.
They are a pain to break in so stock up on moleskin but once you have them broken in they are great.
Also, be careful walking around with them for awhile. Ripple soles have great traction but they take sometime to get used to.
Bottom line, I have 8 pairs of really nice boots from irish setters, other altamas, berettas, and surplus and these boots are my top pic.

I have that same wide foot with a narrow heel afliction. I highly advise the "try before you buy" approach. Additionaly, if you go somewhere like REI, they actually have trained staff that can put you in the best pair of boots for YOUR feet. And, as far as I know they don't work on commission so you are less likely to be pressured to buy.

What is REI? Thanks for the comments guys. Its nice to know people who can give some really good advice. Im lucky I found this site. You guys are great. I know that it seems to me that every boot fits different and some boots and shoes I can wear a 8 1/2 and some even a 10 wide, so that tells me each is just a different fit. I honestly dont know what size foot I have. I live in Ms. so I dont know were a Redwing dealer is closest to me. It would be nice to try some on. I heard that Redwing sells EEE. I know that I can wear the Atamas in XW cause that is what i have worn in the Army but they dont sell the desert tan in XW, only in Wide so Im hoping that I can stretch them if I have to. I want the desert Tan, I have them in Black. I dont like the color black in boots. Im just gonna give them a try and if they dont work then Ill send them back and get somthing else. There are just no good choices for boots in this area. I have Lacross boots for the winter but none that I like for the summer.

REI is an outdoors equipment retail outlet. They have an outstanding policy of standing behind what they sell.

Most high end shoe retailers will do a custom fitting, REI is just the first that came to mind. Look around your area for higher end outdoor equipment retailers. Stay away from the mall, and retailers whose sales staff work on commission. It may be anathema on these forums to say this, but boot choice is more important than knife choice. You obviously already know what living with uncomfortable footwear is like. It sucks if you have to, but you shouldn't have to. I really like my danners, but they are a bit spendy.

Thanks guys. Yall have helped me more than you know. I have in mind a few boot shops that is supposed to be good. Ill ask them to measure my feet. Oh and I may try to find some danners and see what there like.

I guess, for me its always been hit or miss on footwear, I do like a pair of redwings that I have...I am wearing them right now. I don't know if I would hike in them, but they are well made. I would expect to spend atleast that much for a good pair of boots.

Check out Chippewa boots. They are made by Justin Boot co. and are very high quality for the price and very comfortable. I have purchased some off of auction sites that are great for around $50.

Check out Whites boots. handmade in America. Most comfortable boots i've ever worn. most durable too. They are my work outdoor and everyday boots.
