Boots?

Salewa Firetail EVO Mid GTX - Best hiking boots I've ever had. Super adjustable lacing, incredibly grippy sole, perfect for moderately technical hiking involving lots of scrambling. They're even do-able for light boldering. They come in a low top too for those not frequently carrying a pack.

Check out Salomon boots. I have the pair below and they're the best pair of hiking/daily boots I've ever had/tried by a LONG shot. They're not cheap though. Mine were $160. That sounds like a lot but these things feel so nice that I feel they're totally worth it. I tried on a bunch... under armor, bates, magnum, Columbia, timberland, these Salomons blew them all away.

They fit perfectly, very snug and tight and comfortable, but not to the point that they ever hurt to wear, even after many hours. i can't say more good things, although they are expensive I can honestly say I've never had any type of boot/shoe/sneaker that were as nice as these in any way.

These are water resistant with goretex, amongst other things. They have high tops/medium top etc. check the site out. I wear steel toe boots at work by requirement so I don't need to wear these boots during the week but on the weekends I always wear them no matter what I am doing. They're great for just walking around the area but I would also wear them hiking etc. Hell, I'd wear these if it was the end of the world and I'd sure as hell wanna wear them if I had to go to war or raid a North Korean nuclear power plant. Very likely, of course.

I got mine at Dicks. If you have any of those around you check there. And just a heads up I got a pair that were 1/2 size smaller then I normally wear and that's what fit me right.

Those are absolutely awesome, I'm going to see if I can find a place locally that has them.

I do like Danner a lot, as well as the USA made Carolina Boots, Nicks, Whites, etc.

Awaiting for these urban trekkers to arrive. Got them from Sierra Trading Post for 57% off/43% of retail.

I think I might have just found my next pair of hiking boots!

Yeah those do look awesome. Definitely the only thing I've seen so far that has interested me aside from my salomons. They seem very similar though aside from color, so that is probably why.

These weigh 6.4 oz. per shoe. I hike over 10 miles per day in these. They are also my camp shoes and river crossing shoes.

I bought them to replace my Salomons which finally wore out after 6 years or so. I ended up on the Salewas instead of another pair of Salomons because the parts that wore out on them were reinforced on the Salewas, they also offered multiple swapable insoles for different socks/foot shapes, the climbing shoe style lacing was a big appeal since it lets you adjust the lacing based on what terrain you're encountering, and the goretex lining was nice though Salomon offers that too. The biggest surprise was how soft and grippy the outsole is, its really surprising.

You get a lot for you dollar with Salomons, I loved mine, and think of the Salewas as just a more feature packed version.

I have had several pairs of Salomon (XA Pro, Authentic & ?) and found them to be comfortable but I also found that the Contagrip outsoles, although very grippy, tend to wear out rather quickly. Not as quick wearing nor as grippy as Merrell's Sticky Rubber soles but I didn't feel that they lasted near as long as most Vibram soles. Keep in mind I'm a pretty big guy and put more stress on outsoles than most do and that is one of the reasons why I pay particular attention to outsoles as well as how they are attached to the boot. That being said I am on my second pair of Salomon Techamphibians which are my favorite kayak fishing shoes and still use some Merrell man clogs as slippers.

Those Salewa boots look very interesting and given my affinity to German boots and Vibram soles I just might give some a try in the future.

Danner Mountain Lites for hiking. I've been wearing these for over 20 years and just bought another pair with no regrets. Luckily I found them on sale for under $250 (regular price has gone up to $320)

I Have Danner Pronghorns that I like the feel except the leak water walking in wet alfala big time...

These are my work boots, from Matterhorn. Beautifully water-proof up to depths of 16". Aside from my current workboot, I keep an old pair around the house for snow and winter mud hikes.

Here's a similar pair that I keep in Australia for jobs down there. Also perfectly waterproof and incredibly durable, but only 14". Model 65-591 from Oliver Boots.

Danner Mountain Lights are very long wearing boots. I'm on my 2nd pair on Mountain Lights and also have a pair of high mileage Danner Light II boots which shares the same Vibram Kletterlift sole but has leather and Cordura uppers instead of the one piece leather. The stitchdown construction is expensive but worth it IMO.

I like the looks of those Oliver boots.

You ought to look at Keen too.

Keen makes great shoes. I tried a couple pairs of them on once, the toe box is well designed, good arch support, and the lacing is as good as it gets. I ended up going with Merrell, they were a little less expensive (sale at the store 15% off) and they had the color scheme I liked.

I am on my second pair of Danner Ft Lewis boots now. The first ones lasted over 5 years (worn almost every day). The price keeps getting higher - but I think you would be hard pressed to find anything better than Danner.

I've had a pair for 30 years. Only wear them when shoveling snow.
