Bored with Current Knife Offerings

The ZT30X are good knives, a bit heavy though.

I can't get into Emersons. I'm sorry but I don't find the quality matching the price.

Someone mention a Mcusta? Get one.

I was going to post that in the "not worth the money" thread. Biggest POS I ever bought. How he sells knives or keeps a reputation I'll never know.

BTW, it wasn't just one knife. I tried 4 different knives, 3 models, all sucked. I did have one cqc that was ok, but nowhere near the $$ or rep.

I have 2 of the CQC7B models and a Raven. I like and carry the CQC7Bs
quite a bit but the Raven is a disappointment---thumb stud in the wrong place and a liner problem that has been corrected twice. Got a few of the Benchmade versions of the CQC7B as well--better knife, imo.

Don't think I can put it in words, I just know it when I see it. If I had to say, I'd guess technology and/or cool factor. My favorite is the Axis lock for it's smooth action and ease of operation.

The Axis-lock is hard to beat for ease of use - it is my favorite for that reason.

You might look at some of the Kershaw "composite" knives or a "stud-lock" knife. I have an Offset, which has some neat technology, though the knife isn't of EDC caliber IMO. The Spec Bump is a bit more practical, but the blade shape can be an issue.

The new Spyderco "caged ball-bearing lock" knives aren't too bad. The use of the lock is convenient, but strong fingers and/or time are needed. I've been carrying a P'Kal as an EDC and it isn't too bad (great rope cutter, for example).

Like autos? Perhaps Dalton may have an offering you'd like. Dalton offers so many designs and numerous locking mechanisms. I like my Scalper model knives and the lock it uses. I'd like to see a manual version of a knife with that lock.

Or perhaps simply aquiring the "classic" knives may be nice. Benchmade 710, Spyderco Military, and Buck 110. With these knives you have prime examples of what a folder can offer as to use, shapes, abilities - to compare with other knives you may handle, own, or think of owning.

save up, get something that costs more than 200 dollars. or else hunt down some of the discontinued BMs: 690, 705, 730, 750, 770.

I agree with your opinion of the axis lock! My vote goes to the Benchmade 940 Osborne limited edition in D2 tool steel. 3.4" modified-reverse tanto blade, blue anodized 6061-T6 handles!! For about $160!!

I like the Axis-lock a lot. It’s still my favorite mechanism.
However, I do like some other brands as well, despite the lack of the Axis system.

Here’s a few I like:

Al Mar Mini-SERE. Fantastic quality, super smooth and fast opening. The full size SERE is nice also, but it’s not quite as handy.

ZT 0200, Good quality, no speed safe, which is fine with me since I don’t like assisted openers. Very big and heavy though.

Like you, I hate most Spyderco’s. However, I recently got a Paramilitary. I like it very much. It isn’t quite as dorky looking as most of the Spydies. The compression lock isn’t an Axis, but it works well. Forget the Spyderco Ball-lock. It is slippery and hard to use. It’s an Axis wanna-be. I had a Phoenix and sold it partly for that reason.

Many of Benchmades older models are really nice knives, much better than their current offerings if you ask me. The original Presidio series, the Sequels and the Osborne series are great folders. An Osborne Swichback will change your mind about the modified Warncliff, I guarantee you. It is one of my favorite EDC’s.

If you can go to a brick and mortar store to check these out, do it. Real life examination changes minds.

You have to try that Manix 2 with the CBBL. :)

I did.

The mechanism worked OK.

I just didn't care for the overall quality and package.

What about SOG? They have plenty of knives with the Arc-Lock, which is basically the same as the axis lock and plenty of cool designs. MAybe take a look at the Vulcan, Architech or similar? Or Cold Steel? They sometimes use the so-called Ultra Lock, which is also a kind of Axis lock and they have a few VERY robust and heavy-duty designs like the Recon 1 or others.
That' s what comes to my head right now when I read what you wrote.

I want a new EDC folder for the rotation, but nothing catches my eye. I have two Griptillians and a Rift, love the axis lock, would like to add another. But I just don't see anything under $200 I can get excited about. The ZT 301 comes close, but it's a bit heavy and pricey at $236. Comments/Suggestions?

Kershaw has a ton of offerings under $200 to choose from
