Borrow a Belt in SW Virginia

Hi all,

I've been a long time lurker on this forum- lots and lots of incredibly good information. I've made enough knives to benefit greatly from many posts, but haven't made enough to be a meaningful contributor. . . yet.
I'm currently building a 2x72" grinder (I just *have* to see what the fuss is all about), and have run into a small snag; I don't have any 2x72" belts! Having done all my work up to this point with hand tools and a belt/disc combo sander, I've not had a need for 72" belts. As much as I'd like to go ahead and order a few, if my grinder turns out to be a POS, I'd hate to have wasted the dough on belts and shipping. Like many of the broke jokers on this here forum, I'm building my own grinder out of necessity. If this doesn't work out, I'm not just going to go out and buy one- I'll go back to hand tools, maybe putting aside some dough every so often that may go toward a grinder at some point.

SO, now that we've gotten the background out of the way, let's get to the point. I want to borrow a belt. It can be totally worn out, brand new, whatever; I don't want to keep it, just use it to see if this sucker is going to run correctly. I've mocked everything up with a 72" length of masking tape taped to itself and made into a loop. All fitment seems good, but I have a feeling a 72" belt might be a little different.
I'm in Blacksburg, VA. If anyone happens to be nearby and wouldn't mind loaning be a belt for a couple days, I'm sure there'd be some beers in it for ya'.

Thanks,
-NN

show a photo of your 2X72" grinder - we'll tell you if you've got a chance of it working. "IF" I were anywhere close, I'm be more than happy to give you a couple of belts to play with. Pop's knife supply has very reasonable shipping - you might give them a call.

Well, if you will send me your name and address to my regular email I will send you a couple. I won't guarantee that they will be worn out but it won't matter because I won't want them back in any case. My email is niro@telus.net I live near the west cost of Canada
. Mail going to you will be slow but hey if you get say two new ones, you can have a fun time when they get there. Frank

Frank,

That's a heck of an offer! Thank you very very much. I'm humbled by the generosity.

Please allow me to let the "ad" run for a couple days; if someone local can save you the shipping and belt expense. . .

Ken,

I'll get some pictures up tonight or tomorrow evening. I ran my masking tape "belt" last night, and all went well.

There are plenty of makers in your area who could give you a belt. Have you contacted any of them?
My first thought was, "Why didn't you order a belt to build it with" :) .

I would be glad to stick some belts in a padded mailer. Just email or PM me with your info. Frank is a great guy, but mailing a belt from Canada is way beyond being nice. I'm only a day's mail away.

I'm blown away. You guys are out of this world.
Having lived in Vancouver, BC, I know the shipping prices to get stuff to the States. As such, I'll take you up on that offer, Stacy; with utmost appreciation to Frank, of course. Perhaps, though, you should wait 'til I get the pics up? I'd hate to make you go through the trouble when a photo would have sufficed.
I should have time tomorrow afternoon to get in the shop and get some pictures.

I believe Stacy and I both figure the pictures can wait for another day. We want to help get that thing turning ! Boy does it help in the making of a knife.
You can't have a nicer guy or a better maker helping you out than Stacy.
If you are looking for some material for a knife I may have you what you want and can help out in some stainless AEB-L I cannot do the heat treating for you. I send it all out to be done.
If necessary keep fighting the problems until you get the good results.
By the way, I love to and do help makers in my shop here and to give up a few belts for the enjoyment I get is nothing. Not all can do this. But in another life quite a few years ago my wife told me she would see that this would happen if I didn't get carried away then. We even had to move three times since then then . Frank
