i got a boss jack (tequila, no choil) at blade for a user, my buddy ended up with a blue/blk choil...Im thinking I liked the choil version better as a user after "playing" with both at the kitchen table for awhile....someone tell me im dumb? and then back it up :p

...basically, without saying its personal preference...if you have used a no choil talk me into keeping it!!!

Trades need to be kept in the trade forums, If you'd like to keep this as a discussion of choil vs. non choil you should edit out the trade offer from your post. If you want this to be a trade post, it will be moved to the appropriate sub forum and you'll receive an infraction (a temporary one that expires).

This is the knife trade forum:

In regards to choil vs. non choil, if you've never had a problem with choils and you like them better, go for that. There are plenty of reasons to go for non-choil and only 2 for having the choil (aesthetics and "choking up").

not a trade post...asking for conversation so it was removed.

personally, i love the ability to choke up on the blade with the large choil, and IMHO the blade just begs for you to choke up on it sometimes. It just has a great balance in your hand either way when you are holding it. plus, it really helps when you are doing finer work with the blade.

I found the Boss Jack choil to be small for my big index finger.
I'd go with no choil because the handle is designed so that your index finger is much closer to the blade than compared to the old SHSJ's. There really is no need to choke up on the Boss Jack with the handle design as it is.

My 2 cents....I like the choil...it just feels better in my hand:thumbup:

I dont get it, asthetics aside. There's nothing you can do with a no-choil that cant be done with a choil. That half inch of blade is no big deal... so... if a choil adds function (if even just a little) why not go with it?

IMO you're taking away a function of the knife by removing the choil. Choking up another half inch, outweighs having a half inch more of blade if you ask me. We're not talking about a 2"-3" blade. There's plenty of edge still with a choil.

Even on the SAR-3 for instance. Sure your finger is only a 1/2" from the blade when behind the talon hole... BUT if it had a choil big enough for your finger, thats a little bit more you can choke up... and a little more control.

yes there is, cut loose plastic bags blind without hanging up. I mean accurately and quickly, like 1 cut motion. even looking at them and doing it in one cut is difficult.

I can grab the gaurd of my modified sus scrofa and have my index finger nearly on top of the edge just as easily as I can with the choiled version, but 99.99% of the time theres no need. I get as much control over the work I'm doing as if I was choking up on a choiled knife and I'm not making the knife 1/2" longer then it needs to be. If I didn't have any restrictions on the size of knife I carry it might be such an issue, but with a max overall carry length of 9" losing 1/2" of blade to a knife with a handle that is already has 1" of overhang at the butt can be hard to swallow.

I prefer the Big Choils.

what? the one you put the sweet edge on? why, if you don't mind?

Yup, that one.

I mainly sold it because I wanted a b11 more than the boss jack, when I saw there were other variants being released for the BJ, I figured I would sell my double cut one and buy a satin one after I receive my B11.

these are WAY bigger than they need to be, but case in point:

in a full grip, my index finger is 1/2" away from the cutting edge, and I could decrease that to 3/8" if I wanted to spend the time sharpening that last bit of ricasso side edge. I've got all the control I need over the object being cut. If I need "more control" I can comfortably grab the guard.

The second is a modified HI ang khola. It's not entire fair to use it as a comparison because the distance from the index finger to the blade is 2", nearly twice as far as most models of busse (save for maybe the fbm series). However, it shows how much less control I have in a full grip then if it was choiless.

The difference between the original and modded versions of my sus scrofa may not seem like much, but it is significant in use. The distance from the edge has been reduced from 1" down to 1/2", and could be brought even closer with a little more time sharpening. Where before I had 1/2 from the pommel to my pinky and another 1/2" from my index finger to the edge that wasn't getting used 99% of the time, now I have the maximum edge in the smallest size package possible from this model.

With the boss jack series, the distance is even more significant because the choiless versions main grind is brought farther towards the handle slabs. This means you have even more control in the full grip than on nearly any other choiless busse to date. You are getting the maximum amount of edge possible for that size of knife, with minimal wasted space between your index finger and the edge. Cut off the butt and you've got a compact design for it's size, something that is uncommon in the busse lineup.

This is the thing you can't do with a choil: cut bunched up material in a full secure grip. Yes, you can choke up, but the choked up position is a compromised grip, it takes more effort from the index and middle finger to keep the blade straight and edge forward that it does in a full grip. It isn't a grip I'd want to be doing extended work in.

With this knife I can close my eyes, grab the bag and cut it without having to worry about where I'm placing my cut, as long as it's on the edge it's good to go. I couldn't do that when it had a choil.

totally agree with canary

i only like choils on bigger knives. and i love my choil-less tank buster. if/when the boss jacks are offered from the site or store i'll definitely be getting one without a choil.
