Good on you for asking the question and finding the answer you needed. LVC and I have always had opposing views on choils, but that is because not everybody uses a tool in the same way. I understand his argument and respect it, but my experience is much different. Not that one is better than the other, just suited to the user. I have guys who can't understand why I prefer using titanium finish or framing hammers instead of what I can drag out of the back of any other work truck in the area. At least we agree on a great cutting tool.

most people will never have a problem with the choil and enjoy the 'extra grip position'. But even if I decided that I loved the choked up grip option, the arguments would still stand against it for me. I could say "but it doesn't wear your hand out that fast", however I've used the choil when my hands are shaky from exertion and it needs more hand strength to be stable. I could say that I could just rake the edge and not worry about things catching in it, but some things need to be cut fast and because of them bunching up (netting, plastic sheeting, fabrics) raking the edge isn't a fast or easy option, it would require you to stop, pay attention and make sure you didn't slash your own left hand.

The biggest argument that I can't get past is working with your knife blind. If your in the woods and it's dark and your flashlight is dead, if your working under your car and have to cut something behind a pipe, or any number of instances when your unable to look at your hands. I don't want the knife in anything but a stable full handed grip, and I don't have to want to think about how the edge is interacting with the material. I want to be able to grab the handle, put the item on the edge of my index finger, push/pull and have it be cut.

The ricasso on the BJCG is so small, with no top guard - makes a choil unnecessary IMO.
