BOSS JACK - LE or CG?

I'm beginning to think you work for Busse Combat. ;)

Well, actually Axel and I have had a few transactions before, a great guy. And to save him the trouble, I point out things that he may have missed. Shipping to him is a real hassel and can really add up so he really is better off getting them all at once cause he will want the other one also. So to save on trouble and time, just get them both. He can afford them :D
The options this time are hard to beat, first time you can choose your own handle color on a LE. And first time for coated to have that kind of grind/edge with a CG price... Shouldn't be a hard decision unless only were on a budget and could get one...:)

:D

They really are great options. I think no matter what, I'm going to have to be getting a CG as well.

This is going to be a long wait.

im not familiar with the boss or the sar-6 and was thinking if im going to spend 400 i should buy a sar -6 since they are still available? i have liked the way the sar looks but the boss looks cool as well? any one have both? what's the better knife.

Ooops. Now I'm in the fangs of the chief INFI seducer :o ;) Yeah, Dan and I share a quite successful history of INFI transactions. Thanks once more brother! And I guess you are right... But isn't there an LE in each CG version? I imagine the cross section of both grinds to be something like this (forgive me, I'm not Picasso):

BOSSJackLEvsCG.jpg

So if you feel that the GC is too thick for your purposes, you could still apply a saber grind and have an LE version without numbering, right?

Yes you could and although it might be fun it sure wouldn't be a quick and easy project though. So how much is your time worth? ;) Then, who is doing the work and is it under warranty if something goes wrong?

I think the new grind for the CG should be pretty impressive on it's own compared to the prototypes, but I am not going to try to grind one into an LE so I am getting a no choil LE. I'm still not sold on the CG over the protos I have at the moment (one satin convex zero edge which I believe the new CG's will be almost identical to, one large choil with fuller and one no choil with fuller) but I am not saying I won't get one either. The "Large Choil" on the protos is too small for my index finger which allows it to "bite". :(

Basically, the LE is the new and different design of the two in my opinion and if you aren't using it for much wood work it should be lighter and more useful in the sense you might find yourself reaching for it first and more often. I could very well be wrong, but you would have to get both to prove it. :p

Some of the logic that helps me decide is comparing a recent similar but larger offering in the Bushwacker Mistress. The CG BWM was a little too blade heavy but the BWM LE felt amazing and still chopped great, if not better do to less strain on your arm. It's hard to explain without feeling for yourself. Also, the Bushwacker LE a .22 saber grind that weighed almost exactly the same as the .187 convex CG which helps explain the balance difference.

Now with the BOSS Jack it is reversed so that the .22 is the convex CG (protos were around 12 oz. in weight) and the LE is even thinner than .187 at .180 so it should be quite a bit lighter yet plenty strong enough to meet 90% of the needs you might have with a 6" blade. The variable here is that the new grind on the CG may lower the weight a bit but my guess is it will still be the heavier of the two and blade heavy to boot. It will be neat to see everyone's opinion once they ship.

You said to make your choice for you, so I say LE with no choil and you will have a knife truly different from any other Busse previously released.

When I sent some of my blades in to be resharpened a couple weeks ago, they all came back convexed. When I asked Amy about it, she said they aren't doing v-ground edges any more on any of their knives.

So while the LEs may be saber ground, the edges should be convex....just not full height like the CG.

I'm waiting to see if I can get magnum slabs on my choilless LE before I pull the trigger.

I got a choiled CG and a choilless LE. I just hope I like them :D

Thanks for all your good advice!

Obviously too late but here is my input anyway. LE with no choil and one of the canvas micarta slabs. Here's why.

The choil is not necessary on this size blade imo. Get the extra 1/4 inch or so blade and run with that. I have both the choilled and non protos and the choil version does have the edge in looks but that is it. I don't buy Busse's for looks I buy them for performance so there it is. The G10 slabs are pretty but they are noticeably heavier, slicker and so this is an easy choice for a blade I will use. Micarta wins every time in every department but looks. See above for my opinion on looks alone. I love the protos which are .22 but ground very thick. But you will never confuse them with a great cutter/slicer. They ain't. The CG may be better with Jerry's description of their zero edge and flat grind but they are still going to be thick. The LE's should be very good slicers and the saber grind should still allow them to be abused somewhat. A very good compromise in my mind. The CG's are a steal at that price point but the LE is going to run circles around them in my mind. If you can swing the extra buck thirty it will be worth it. My two cents. Good luck.

Thanks for the input.

When I had my CABS I had regretted not getting the LCABS because my hand just wanted to go there.. know what I mean? The handle felt good but I found myself wanting to choke up on it a lot.

At first I had ordered the BJ LE in choiless but changed my mind last night and altered my order this morning to the a choil.

+ 1,000,000. Brother I am 100% with you

Even though It'd be nice to have a little more blade, 99% of my knives have a choil and I unconsciously choke up based on muscle memory... I have cut myself a few times on the few knives I've owned without a choil - my BRKT Canadian Special got me REAL good a few years ago...

So... choil for me too :thumbup::thumbup:

Still cant decide if I should go black paper or tan canvas on the LE - I absolutely LOVE tan canvas, BUT itd be nice to have this one match my BWM LE

Glad to hear I'm not the only one!

I went with black canvas for the extra grip and because I love the way it looks. Paper does look killer w/ satin though, as does tan canvas.

You know what they say... get both!

I was torn between black paper (would somewhat match my black paper BWMLE, CABS, SAR6) and black G10 for my BJLE.

Repetitive craving for Busses is plently indicative of addictive behavior as it is... so instead of stereotypically sticking with an identical handle material, I ordered it in black G10, which I secretly prefer. Took me a couple of days to make this life-impacting decision. Baby steps, y'all...

Life impacting decision -- I hear ya. I thought I was free of BusseMania but then the Boss Jacks come out. Never held an old Satin Jack nor a Proto so I have no idea how this will actually feel in hand. But something tells me this one is a winner, sort of like the SFNO-LEs, of which I bought too many, thanks to Amy.

I really want to know what the handle is like on the Boss Jacks. What are your thoughts on the handle shape and thickness? If I had to decide RIGHT NOW and wanted to spend too much money, it would be the following (with choil):

1 LE with black paper
1 LE with black micarta
1 CG with black paper and JUNGLE GREEN! (gotta love JG and BLACK)
1 CG with balck micarta and sage

By the way, I'm drinking a gin and tonic -- probably shows. :p

On the LE I went tan canvas. On the CG doublecut and black canvas. Too many choices to be made this time imho  :( :D
