I just picked up the new Tactical Knives magazine, and saw an advertisement for BOSS Knives. You can see some of their products here:

http://www.wowinc.com/knives.htm

Some of these designs really look amazing. I've never heard of BOSS knives though. Can anyone tell me anything about the quality of their products? TK advertised that most of their knives were $24.95. I know they use 420HC which may be an issue depending on how they treat it. Anyone familiar with these knives? Where are they made and by whom? If these knives are as good as they look, I'll buy them all.

Boss knives are a project started up by Mike Turber, Founder of the Blade Forums. He is trying to reform the way business is done in China. Thats where these knives are being made. But from what I understand I wouldn't let theat deter you. They are supposed to be high quality. I myself am looking forward to allot of the knives in this line. The prices are very reasonable and the designs are great. I am sure when Mike gets a chance he can chime in allot more info than I can. But I am with you. If the quality is there like I am being told. I will by one of everything they make for myself. I would also like to deal some of these knives, As I see a definate future for High End knives at these prices. Hey, CRKT pulled it off, I don't see why others can't :)

Interesting. What do you think about the choice to use 420HC? Do you happen to know when these knives will ship?

Hopefully some others will be able to weigh in on the types of steel. I am still ignorant in that regard. But I believe a few of the models are ready to ship now, and the rest will become available in the next few months.

If you do a search, I am sure you will find more info on this subject. I read not long ago about a few of the shipping dates. Take it easy

If the designs are found to be decent, I'm sure we're going to start hearing the CRKT whine:

"I'd buy it if only it were in 440C/ATS-34/BG-42/S30V/Talonite."

This is one of the benifits of not knowning allot abou the steel types. I have no desire to learn either. I take good care of my knives and do allot of maintence on them. I dont care if they are AU-6 or TT55 for all I care. :D

You can find out more about BOSS knives in this thread.

This is the original contest thread.

Here and here you can find the Tom Anderson Wolf Pup and Lile regular #7 collaborations respectively (they are supposed to already be out).

At the end of this thread, Mike talks a little about the quality of the 420HC.

Hope that helps.

These knives look like they are going to offer great value. For the kind of money these knives are selling for 420HC is an acceptable choice. For an awful lot of people, it is all the steel they are ever going to need.

Thanks guys for your help, greatly appreciated :)

The BOSS line is a line that I have created with a new partner company called Provantus. They actually were a part of the knock off problem but I have convinced them to change how they do business and as far as I know we are going to be the first company to operate in China with the western ideas for marketing as far as knives go. It has already been done and very successfully so in other arenas.

BOSS is going to be a very good quality knife at bargain basement prices. Basically it will provide exceptional value for the money and only a select few have seen them so far. From the direct feedback I have from them, we have a hit.

420HCSS is basically 420 with more carbon than normal. I am looking at other steels but so far I am very happy with the results I am getting from this steel. This aint no cheapo steel either but it is obviously less than ATS-34/154CM/D-2 and others. When they come out I will send one around to forum members so I can get your direct feedback.

One thing that can not be argued is we hit a price point that is really hard to beat.

Contact your favorite dealers and see if they are going to carry the line. If not refer them to me so I can get them on board. $24.95 is a great price but your street price may even be lower by buying from the discount on-line guys.

Remember the old saying you get what you pay for?
Well I think that is about to change :D

Mike: Cool. Decent knives with cool designs for not a lot of cash. I can't remember the last time I spend less than $100.00 for a knife. It looks like you have some really great blades. I will certainly try one out...and if I like it, will pobably buy them all. Good luck with the business venture.

Hey EZ...

For sure some nice blades there.. The simonich and a couple of the Lile fixed blades are on my list....

Mike..

Tried to email you a couple of times.. Seem not to be getting through or something..
Please drop me a note..

Who has the BOSS passarounds, oh, wait, Salsa's?

I haven't seen any reviews yet.

Thanks,

Mike gave me one of the Lile knives at Blade Show.. I still cant believe the fit and finish for the price.. The Simonich model was VERY good too, and I almost thought Rob made it when I saw the proto in Ontario:D Cept the bead blast was a bit different than Rob uses.. The little parasite fit perfect..
Mike really found a way to offer good quality, that ANYONE can afford..

I have one of the Tom Anderson Wolf Pups and am giving it some time in the pocket. I can tell you that it is very light. No blade play. Came with a very nice edge on it that has not dulled with simple cutting. It will go along in my pocket to elk camp this weekend for whittling and abuse. Hope to give a better account in about 10 days. So far, good job Mike.

Thanks for the rave pre reviews guys. I have put several knives through their paces but my reviews are not going to "cut it". You guys are the real test and the feedback, good and bad, are necessary for us to respond to any issues that come up. So far nothing but good. We did our homework and this has been a long time in the making. Now that it is coming together I am getting excited! Even though we do not officially launch til February Shot Show I am getting some models in soon. The Winch (mini-raptor) and my Cheetah should be out next.

Right now things will seem a bit slow through Xmas but I will let you know when new models hit and "Salsa" each.

Trace,

I tried calling you so if you get this call my 800-969-7771 number. Your fixed blade project is on front burner now but need to talk a bit :D

I ordered two of the Wolf Pups myself. Figured I'd abuse one and give one as a gift. :) Well, I'll still abuse one. The two knives are complete opposites of each other even though it's the same knife. On the one, the blade was *very* loose. The slightest movement and the blade started opening. The other one was so tight you almost needed two hands to open it, literally! After a bit of adjusting, and a little militec, both are pretty smooth.

Next concern. One of the knives is great. Smooth opening (now), decent fit (both blades scrape the liners when closing near the top of the blade), and both lock up with with good stability. Neither of the knives came with much of an edge at all, but that can be taken care of pretty easily. The problem I have with the one is that the blade doesn't sit low enough in the liners when closed. The tip of the blade is actually exposed. The blade looks like it just sits too high. I don't need to go into detail about the problems that could cause. ;)

Overall, these are very nice knives for the $25 asking price. If you destroy them with use, it doesn't matter. You aren't losing much. They're better than any other knife that I've seen for that price range. The only real concern is the exposed tip which makes the knife I got totally useless.

That Parasite/Host combo is really slick. I've one question Mike Thurber... Is the Host full tang (or reasonably close)? It occurs to me that the parasite, while in the handle, might even re-inforce a full tang (a little bit).

Hmmm...
Sounds interesting, good knives for cheap! That would be awsome.

Though I do have reservations about buying knives that come from over seas, especially from China.

It all sounds like a great idea, but it would take an awful lot for me to buy a BOSS over a knife that has Made in USA on it.

Guess I'll have to wait and see.

Patryn,

The Wolf-Pup is made by a different factory than the rest of the BOSS line, which is way it looks much different. It is a great buy and overall quality has been excellent. Question, does your version have BOSS on the blade? If not it is from an earlier batch but uses nearly all the same parts.

Waylander,

The Parasite Host is full tang and the Parasite itself fits on the outside of the blade tang but inside the handle. It actually has no effect on the rigidness (new word) of the knife.

Micmurry,

Look for them soon, you may be surprised :)
