What shops in or around the Boston/Eastern MA/Southern NH area do you guys recommend? I like to support the local guy whenever possible, depending on if the product I need/want is available locally.

I bought my last knife from Stoddards, but I think they are out of business now? I buy my darts from another knife shop called On the Edge in Faneuil Hall.

Welcome to the forums!

Kittery trading post all the way!

It's across the river in Maine but the prices are great (30-40% off) and the selection is pretty good too. basically think of it as REI on steriods!

Did I mention they carry customs too?! :D

On the Edge in Fanieul Hall/Quincy Market has a good selection, but prices tend to be MSRP.

I've noticed REI and EMS are now starting to carry more interesting knife brands like Kershaw and Benchmade. And I just visited Stoddards in the Chestnut Hill mall over the weekend and they had Spyderco, Case, Kershaw (some of the pseudo-custom ones by, um, AG Russell). They even had, unfortunately, some verrrryyyyy nice Al Mar stuff. I say "unfortunately", because now I think I need one.

REI, EMS, LL Bean. The knife shop in Quincy Market is EXPENSIVE, but good to get a look at certain things. Also, try out AG Guns in Lowell, they started carrying benchmade.

I'm not sure if he has a store front or not, but I've bought from this dealer at gunshows before. He carries a lot of Buck and Benchmade Knives, as well as some Okapis, Leatherman, Kershaws, and other quality factory brands as well as handcrafted custom type stuff. His prices are very reasonable, and he's a great guy to chat with. His prices aren't bad for being a independent small businessman- sometimes he can even beat the big box stores. According to their business card, they've been in business since 1977. Give them a phone call- Littleton isn't that far from Boston.

Atlantic Bladesmiths
50 Mill Road
Littleton, MA
01460

Point of Contact: Peter Stebbins
Phone Number: 978-952-6448

I don't think Atlantic Bladesmiths has a storefront, but he is a nice guy and has a good selection at shows.

Stoddard's is still around and has nice stuff, I've seen some William Henry at their Chestnut Hill location. I haven't been to Kittery in a while but I imagine they still have quite a bit. On The Edge is okay, prices are full retail as mentioned. They also have, or at least had, a spot in the Providence Place Mall as well.

LL Bean is rather disappointing when it comes to knife selection these days. I was at the Freeport store this summer and they had less then when I was there 2 years ago, which, in turn, was a great deal less than they had 3 or 4 years before that. If you do go as far as Freeport though, the Freeport Knife Company is a good place with nice folks.

Route 53 [whiting st] in Hingham, Sawyers Cutlery. He carries all the major brands, good stocking dealer, open 7 days. Next to the post office.
Bass Pro Shop just opened up in Foxboro on Route 1 next to the Gillette Stadium. Worth the trip if you are not too far away, if only for the wow factor.

Where is this Stoddards, exactly? I live about a two hour drive from Boston, but it might be worth a look (there isn't much around here in CT's Quiet Corner).

I'm from Boston...STAY AWAY FROM KNIFE STORES...except for Sawyers. They are all way over priced. Especially Kittery. I went up there a few weeks ago and they were trying to sell a BM Rukus for like $225. That knife can be had for way less. IMHO, the knife shops like to rip off the unexpecting.

The Outdoor Store in Natick, MA has a ton of cool stuff. Pretty good knife selection and prices are below MSRP.

It's a pretty unique place. Lots of standard things, as well as a nice selection of older stuff, and a few nice customs, especially from New England makers.

Odd hours, IIRC. give the owner a call before you go. He's the kind of guy who will be happy to sit there all afternoon and talk knives, anyway.

I haven't made it to Cove but I've heard nothing but possitive stuff about it.

Suddard's is a sad reflection of what they used to be. They only have a store in Chestnut Hill Mall. All they have now is Kitchen knives and a few folder. They are not a Randall dealer anymore, noor did they have any customs.

On the Edge in Boston has a nice selection but overpriced and the help can be tools sometimes, other times they can be cool. Overpriced

Kittery is always fun somethings they have Randall's they don't last long though. I've seen one or two Customs in the used section. Prices are OK some deals

Sawyers Cutlery in Hingham is a great place large selection of productions and "internet" prices. I've bought a bunch nice Spyderco's over the years, even collector numbers. Of all the places I've been in New England I've spent more money there and anywhere else I can think of.

Hope this helps

I have given them a few thousand dollars over the years!! lol My most recent purchase from them was CRKT Hissatsu folder...that I carry alot.

SL (state line) gun shop in mason, nh has some benchmade, Al Mar, etc. It is really nice to hold a knife in your hand before buying.
