I was waiting on the train tracks to go meet my aunt and uncle at the finish line near Copley, which we've done every year since I moved to Boston in 2005, when I got a notification on my iPhone from NY Times about the bombing. I frantically tried to reach my aunt and uncle and their phones kept going to voicemail. Luckily, I was running about 30 minutes late because I had to reboot a server from home for work. I finally got in touch with my aunt and uncle. They had started walking there, but were about a half mile away when the bombs detonated. They saw the smoke and people panicking.
I know plenty of runners and people who were at the finish line and witnessed the tragedy. A friend of mine was among the injured, but from what I have heard, he is out of the trauma ward and in recovery. One of my friends was 2 blocks away when the bombs went off and described the scene to me in detail. It was very traumatizing to him, as I'm sure you can imagine.
My prayers go out to the families of the deceased and the injured, especially those who lost limbs or are still in critical condition at the various trauma centers in Boston.
From what I understand, the emergency response was fantastic. A big thanks goes out to all of the first responders and good Samaritans who helped to save lives by caring for and triaging the injured and by getting people out of the area during the tragedy.
As I was writing this, another NY Times article popped up, saying that the FBI have a potential suspect. They are analyzing the photos and videos taken by security cameras and cell phones frame by frame with facial recognition software. Let's hope they find the person(s) responsible for this tragedy. If anyone was in the area and has photos or videos, I urge you to send them to the FBI investigators.
