What's up with bottle openers on knives. Seems a waste. When was the last time you actually needed a bottle opener? What else can they be used for?

Depends on the bottle opener. The bottle opener on Swiss Army Knives for example, can be used as a flat head screwdriver and a wire stripper. It’s also good for light prying tasks like opening a can of paint.

It has a half stop so you can use it in the half opened position as well as the fully opened position.

It can also be used to push the key chain eyelet outward if you’re one of those people (like me) who likes to cut the eyelet off.

store a 3 to 5mm dia "super" magnet?
All the screwdriver blades I am familiar with (SAK's and 4 blade Scout/Demo knives) have a flat blade screwdriver "tip".
As Railsplitter Railsplitter mentioned, they can be used as a light pry bar. Only the "gods", demons, and devils know how many cans of paint, stain, and varnish I have opened using the caplifter/screwdriver blade on my 4 blade Scout/Demo knives over the last 6 decades.

I am not a drinker. However, I "think" some of the imported bottled beers have a non twist-off cap.

IF I remember right, a few of the bottled beers I had back in the 1970's (mainly Fallstaff, Schlitz, and Bud) had "twist-off" caps that were easier to remove with a caplifter.

I see Pepsi and Coke has "gone back" to return-when-empty glass bottles (they still offer cans with pull tabs,, and larger plastic bottles with screw caps, of course) that (sofar as I know) require a caplifter, like the ones I drank in the 1950's to the 1970's, when I switched to cans & later 16 ounce plastic bottles, then to 2 liters.
I don't know about RC Cola's, and 7 Up's glass bottles. The last RC Cola I had (1990) needed a bottle opener. I have not seen glass bottles of 7 Up in at least 35-40 years. Even we had our conveniencd store in the late 80's to mid 90's we had 12 ounce cans, 16 ounce and 2 liter plastic screw cap bottles. I don't believe 12 ounce glass bottles were available in our markets. (we had stores in IA., TN., & KS.)

The last bottle of beer I opened with a cap lifter?...around 6:30 at dinner ;)

I use the cap lifter for lifting caps as much as I use it as a screwdriver. As a matter of fact, I never go to a social engagement without a SAK sporting both a cap lifter and a corkscrew. Two things that people often forget about needing until they need them.

Stupidest place for bottle opener I’ve seen has been a ”tactical” tomahawk handle or shaft. And I mean the part where you grab the thing, not the blade.
I think the manchild gadgets get them so often that it has to be some kind of self conscious joke at this point.
Absolutely nothing wrong with putting them to regular multitool though.

Me personally I rarely drink beer on the field in demanding circumstances but at home. When going on a picnic I usually get a can (and usually a can anyway) because they are easier to transport.

If I get the gravings for glass bottled beer I usually use bic lighter. I don’t need beer battle pry limited edition access pass titanium for that.

My hands don't grip like they used to, so I use the cap lifter to work around the lid on pickle jars, salsa jars, etc. Just enough to loosen the seal and the lid releases.
That's when I use the awl.
Pop a pinhole in the lid to relieve the vacuum and the lid screws right off.
If you're concerned about the hole a tiny piece of Scotch tape will fix that.

100% Agreed.

Not a twist off.

I'm staring down this issue. The bones in the palm of my hand and my knuckles feel like cr@p today.
