Bought expandable baton today

It’s always better to learn to avoid encounters than to equip for them. I can’t take a parachute or a knife while flying commercial, so I’m taking a risk everytime I do.
I have “survived” race riots in urban areas by deliberately walking slowly, close to buildings, with my fingers curled to keep attention away from myself long enough to get the hell out of the hood to a safe place.
Does curling your fingers make you invisible in a "race riot"?

If this were the W&C forum I'd be tempted to comment that simply being in the same city where a race riot breaks out, doesn't qualify you as being a survivor.

I realize that. I was on foot across the street (10yards away, at night) from a group of 80-90 thugs who were looting a store and beating up a rather large white guy. Even if I had been armed, I wouldn’t have been able to help. He wasn’t killed, so maybe it doesn’t meet your standard of a race riot, which is why I put the word “survived” in parenthesis. If this were w&c I would not have taken the bait and responded.

Curling the fingers while walking helps focus ones attention, which is important to do if one is trying to minimize one’s profile and presence, and not to inadvertently grab attention from someone in a crowd. Perception is an interdependent phenomenon, and while it may not be possible to control entirely, there are ways to influence it. Not just for race riots, though.

Of course! I should have seen that right away. Curling the fingers focuses ones attention. Especially in "race riots". How could I have missed that!--KV

Yonose, you're a very entertaining guy! I think I'll just curl my fingers and no one will see me ease on out of here. :)--KV

I carry a Baton daily in my job. I can tell you even with training in how to use one they are not all that. This is coming from someone that has used one in self defense several times. For personal defense off the job I will stick to a firearm,if I had to use it it would be easier to defend than if I used a Baton. Not to mention I believe they are still illegal for the general public to carry here.

In all seriousness can you share why this is? like where are you hitting with baton's? Are you hitting the large muscle groups like police and such are taught or are you hitting bone and trying to break a persons thigh or forearm or collar bone or skull? That is the main issue with police baton practice. They need to aim for bones and not muscle groups to get the full effect out of the baton.

Also for anyone who is wondering my expandable baton kind of gave out on me in that the sheath ripped and it is a pain to carry without a sheath. So I have parted out the baton for parts. Not I have 3 steel tubes that I am using for other projects.

Deep down I knew I was just wasting money.

So now I am back to just carrying my kubotan for the coolness factor and my big knife concealed of course.

Police don't go for muscle groups NOR bones...they go for the joints.

Someday I'm gonna remember to not even read these posts ... before I can no longer bite me tounge ... smh

Batons don't work well for SD against a well built / adrenalized attacker. They tend to bounce right off to no effect. They do work on most dogs and are useful as a prodding / examination tool, like a cop would to see if someone is alive or just sleeping or to get a door open or pry something. It's a tool.

A different strategy... I was standing with a friend outside his house one day. He was telling me that clovers were edible. We saw a guy going door to door down the street, probably selling something. As he got closer, my friend gets down on all fours and starts chomping down on the patches of three leaf clovers like a hungry hungry hippo. The guy looks at him eating the lawn, and decides to pass us up for the next house. This strategy is also great, so you can save money on salads at those $10 restaurants. :D
